These two terrific Thrift Shops have bargains on tons of things, like clothing, furniture, jewelry, and so much more. The original shop in San Pedro is known for its hipster vibe and super cool vintage clothes. Long Beach, the newer location, is enormous, with over 13,000 square feet of bargains galore. Check them both out. When you shop, you’ll be supporting The Beacon House Association on San Pedro, a nonprofit dedicated to helping men recover from addiction and rejoin their families and communities. Both locations are open seven days a week.

Recess

Recess first opened its doors ten years ago, and since then has become quite well-known for a “curated, unique assortment of fun vintage and contemporary clothing and accessories.” A lifestyle expansion in 2021 means in addition to clothing and accessories you can now find home decor “from the 20’s to the present, including unique haute couture, non-designer, and global finds.” Recess is open six days a week, closed on Sundays. Note: Be sure to check the website for additional offerings.

The Colleagues

“The Colleagues’ resale room sells vintage, budget and designer clothes, accessories, jewelry, menswear, antiques, decorative arts, and home goods.” This high-end designer resale shop is part of a non-profit founded in 1950, and sales benefits Children’s Institute, Inc. The collection changes constantly, based on current donations, but you can count on the quality to be high and the selection to be fabulous. Currently open only on Saturdays from 10 am to 3 pm. Be sure to check the website for the most current operating hours. 

Crossroads

Buffalo Exchange

With stores across the country and several stores within the Los Angeles area, Buffalo Exchange is a “pioneer in the resale fashion industry, buying, selling, and trading clothing and accessories since 1974.” Buffalo Exchange is unique because clothing and accessories are bought, sold, and traded locally with store customers. In addition, Buffalo Exchange is deeply involved in their local communities, supporting both national and local charities, keeping single-use plastic bags out of the landfills, and hosting special events such as the annual Earth Day $1 Sale. (Every year, on the Saturday closest to Earth Day, a fundraising $1 sale takes place at all locations, and all proceeds go to a non-profit organization.)

The Council Thrift Shops are a community resource of the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW). The first shop opened in 1924, and served immigrants coming to Los Angeles, by being stocked with useful household items. The Salvation Army Thrift Store

We all know the good work The Salvation Army does in in our communities. One way to help is by donating gently-used, no-longer-needed items. Another way to help, is by shopping one of their many thrift stores. The proceeds from thrift store sales are used to fund Adult Rehabilitation Centers. Some locations feature a thrift store and donation center, while others are only thrift stores.

Clark & Atherton Mercantile

Proceeds are used to “feed and clothe the homeless, low income, and senior communities of Long Beach.” Open seven days a week. 

Rose Bowl Flea Market and Market Place

Mark your calendars – the second Sunday of each month you can shop at the Rose Bowl Flea Market and Market Place, also known as the “World’s Largest Flea Market.” And while it’s not technically a store, it does need to be included on a list highlighting resale opportunities. Shop from over 2500 vendors “selling everything from coveted antiques, rare vintage finds, and today’s most up-to-date trends.” Tickets are now available online.

House of Yahweh Thrift Store in Lawndale is a treasure trove of bargains! Clothing, household goods, shoes and knickknacks all at cut rate prices.
