I have two boys, but if I had a girl I would love to send her to Amplify Sleepaway Camp in Ojai. It’s a music camp for girls where girls form a band, write a song and put on a show while also learning the value of teamwork and why girls should support each other. The program works to challenge gender stereotypes, encourage collaboration and tolerance among peers, and provide a comfortable space for girls of all backgrounds to express themselves. It sounds amazing.
Amplify is for girls ages 11 to 17 that want to learn how to play an instrument and for those looking to improve with the help of trained musicians. The girls form a band and work together to write and perform a song.
“Girls come in who have never played guitar and when they leave you would have thought they’d been playing guitar for years,” said Executive Director Jenn Baron. Ninety percent of the staff at Girls Rock Santa Barbara, the nonprofit Baron founded, have a bachelors or masters degrees from a music conservatory. In addition to the Amplify camp, Girls Rock provides after school music classes and a yearly weekend retreat for women.
Girls can attend the camp for 1 to 4 weeks and learn to play vocals, drums, guitar, bass, keys, or other instruments and choose a track, which includes Music, Photography and Filmmaking, and Journalism. In the journalism program, campers learn from professional journalists from magazines like Rolling Stone and Elle and have articles published in the local paper. Girls in the photography track have had the opportunity to shoot live music events.
In addition to all of that, girls get to do fun camp activities like swimming, self-defense, a rope course, t-shirt making and zine- and comic book making in beautiful Ojai. Campers stay at Ojai Valley school in private, air-conditioned residence halls with access to a private pool and a movie theatre for evening films. At the end of the week, campers perform the song they wrote with their band at a concert for family and friends.
Campers can attend for one week or all 4. Amplify Sleepaway camp offers financial aid – 40 percent of campers are on some kind of financial aid, Baron said.
