MomsLA Contributor Jamie Lynne Grumet is on the cover of Time Magazine this week nursing her 3-year-old son. It came out online this morning and Twitter, Facebook, and every major media outlet has since exploded with comments.
The article is about parenting guru Dr. Bill Sears and his attachment parenting method, but the focus has been on the picture. Was it done for shock value? Is it appropriate? The headline is confrontational “Are You Mom Enough?” Does nursing your baby make you more mom is what it implies to me.
The cover is incredible. It’s bold and it’s amazing and I’m overwhelmed with admiration of her bravery. I’ll admit I was shocked when I saw the picture. Not because Jamie is seen nursing her son, but because of what I fear will happen next. Or what is happening now.
I don’t want this to turn into another way for Mothers to start attacking each other. I don’t want the news cycle talking about how the Mommy Wars were ignited by the issue of attachment parenting (which isn’t a new issue anyway. People were battling it out over this when I had my older son 8 1/2 years ago).
This seems to me it’s just another way to get us fighting with each other. Another way to get us to try to take each other down and lose focus from the real issues in this country like poverty and hunger.
Let’s keep it civil.
