Nobel Prize-winning Irish playwright Samuel Beckett is at his absurdist, allegorical best in this quintet of rarely-staged short plays, produced by L.A.'s Odyssey Theatre. Most famous for his modernist masterpiece "Waiting for Godot", Beckett also penned several one-acts reflecting his darkly comic view of the world, including "Act Without Words II", in which non-speaking characters react to attempts by outside forces to control them. "Catastrophe", considered one of Beckett's most political plays, is a commentary on the power of totalitarianism, inspired by Czech writer and dissident Vaclav Havel, and in "Krapp's Last Tape", Beckett introduces us to a self-absorbed man who makes a recording each birthday, documenting the events of his year. On his 69th, he gets caught up in listening to his archives and experiences a lifetime of regret. "Come and Go" and "Footfalls" are also on the bill for this exciting night of theater. [less-]

The whole family is bound to find something to love in "I'm Just Wild About Harry", an exciting musical romp based on Brandon Thomas's classic 19th-century farce, "Charley's Aunt". Set in turn-of-the-century Milwaukee, the play concerns a couple of undergraduates who need a chaperone in order to romance their sweethearts. Enter their friend Benjamin to impersonate Harry's Aunt, a rich widow from Brazil. Hilarity ensues when Harry's Aunt actually arrives on the scene, and this musical farce of mistaken identity climaxes in a delightfully happy conclusion. The musical incorporates such nostalgic favorites as "Daisy Bell (A Bicycle Built for Two)," "Aba Daba Honeymoon" and "You Made Me Love You." Enjoy "I'm Just Wild About Harry" at North Hollywood's Crown City Theatre. [less-]

Based on interviews conducted with women from all over the world, Eve Ensler's award-winning play "The Vagina Monologues" is a hilarious and deeply poignant collection of stories that gives voice to a chorus of common experiences and feelings once considered taboo. The popular show, performed by a rotating cast of 26 actresses, manages to be feminist without being man-hating, entertaining without being trite, and political without being offensive. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Peace Over Violence, a nonprofit benefiting battered women and children in Los Angeles. When Agatha Christie's brilliantly plotted courtroom whodunit first opened on Broadway in 1954, the "New York Herald Tribune" proclaimed that its central mystery is so thrilling "you are apt to find yourself gasping out loud." Audiences for over half a century have delighted in unraveling the mystery of this finely crafted play, and now you too can act as armchair detective when "Witness for the Prosecution" comes to North Hollywood's Lonny Chapman Theatre. Christie's tale centers around small-time inventor Leonard Vole, who's been arrested for the murder of the elderly widow Emily French. Vole happens to be French's principal heir, making things look bad for the defense. Then Vole's wife sends shockwaves through the courtroom by testifying as a witness -- for the prosecution! -- and the trial becomes a riveting roller coaster of suspense. [less-]

The 1960 Woolworth's lunch counter sit-ins by four black college freshmen galvanized the United States civil rights movement, but how did nearby bystanders process this pivotal event as it was unfolding? The stirring drama "Periphery" takes a look at some of the folks who were on the fringe of those sit-ins, and who suddenly found themselves on the brink of continuing past injustices or moving boldly forward into a fairer, more tolerant future. Full of vibrant characters on both sides of the racial divide, "Periphery" lets you be a witness to the witnesses of a 57-year-old turning point in American history. [less-]

"Belafonte Unauthorized" is a stirring one-man show that takes a look at legendary singer Harry Belafonte's unique relationship with the Civil Rights Movement. Belafonte was an entertainer, but he was also a major activist who promoted social change through his work, and like many singers and artists of the day, he helped fund the movement with his own money. Because of his efforts, Belafonte helped change the idea of how a celebrity could be involved in major social affairs. Starring Austen Jaye ("Angie Tribeca", "Hello Cupid") and directed by NAACP and international award-winning actor-writer Aaron Braxton ("Scorpion, Two Broke Girls, Did You Do Your Homework?"), "Belafonte Unauthorized" at The New Collective LA in Los Angeles will put both a major entertainment figure and an historic social movement in a brand new context. Based on the beloved book by "War Horse" author Michael Morpurgo, this play tears apart everything we thought we knew about the World War II D-Day landing on the beaches of Normandy in this tender tale of love and war. England-based theatrical company Kneehigh Theatre, which wowed Wallis audiences with "Brief Encounter", now returns with their grab-bag of music, puppetry and boisterousness to tell the tale of "946: The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips". Be transported to the sleepy village of Slapton Sands, England, 1944, where a young girl experiences soldiers occupying her family house and property, with only her cat to confide in. The show proves that even with death and destruction all around, it takes more than a world war to bring down the human spirit. You won't want to miss the production that "The Times" (London) calls "a wonderfully life-affirming piece of theatre ... touchingly and gloriously imaginative." [less-]
