We don’t have true seasons here in Los Angeles. But the minute there’s a chill in the air, it’s Fall to me. And Fall means comfort food.
I’m from Tucson (a place with even fewer seasons) and I loved that whenever the weather turned cool, my mom would make posole. Posole is a red chile soup cooked with pork and hominy. It was comfort food because it was a staple to have on New Years Eve after we rang in the new year. As everyone was winding down from our annual New Year’s party she would serve warm bowls of Posole. I’ve made it my tradition for my Los Angeles family’s New Year’s party even though we all have little kids and none of us actually make it to midnight.
There’s no place I’ve found in Los Angeles that makes posole like my mom’s (or mine), so I’m always on the search for Fall comfort food favorites.
I may have found one last week. My diet has changed recently thanks to our MomsLA #MakeBetter Challenge and prior to that I had given up gluten. That means dining out isn’t easy. But because I love comfort food in the chilly weather, I was on a mission. I did not think I would find a new comfort food favorite at a cafe near a college packed with students, but I did. Sarah introduced me to Cafe Bolivar in Santa Monica so we could use our Restaurant. com gift certificates and I fell in love with the small Arepas.
Arepas are made with corn so they’re gluten free. They are a perfect fall treat because they’re not too big, but very filling. I loved the one filled with black beans and corn and of course I had to try one filled with shredded pork. Delicious.Even if we hadn’t used our Restaurant.com gift certificate (such a deal) the meal there wasn’t expensive.
Corn and cilantro for me are the ultimate flavors of home, which means comfort food. The Arepas have plenty of it. Until I find the perfect restaurant Posole, I’ll hit Cafe Bolivar to get my comfort food fix.
