The LAUSD Magnet Season is upon us, a month earlier than usual this year, and with many changes over years past. Parents can find information at eChoices.LAUSD.net.
Since school began for LAUSD in August this year, many deadlines have been moved up, and that includes the Magnet Process. What used to be done on paper is now online, and while last year parents had until December 17th to file their choices, this year it must be completed by November 16th, the Friday before Thanksgiving Break.
For more of the changes to the process this year, MomsLA consulted with Tanya Anton, of the Go Mama Guide, a website dedicated to helping parents navigate public school choices in Los Angeles. Anton had this to say:
The LAUSD Magnet/eChoices program website went live October 8, officially opening the 5-week online application window which closes at 5p on Friday, November 16, 2012. This is one month EARLIER than last year and features some BIG changes for 2013.
Highlights include the big one: you can now choose up to THREE magnet choices. Your points will only go toward your first choice, and you will be added to the wait list of your 2nd and 3rd choices. If selected into ANY of the magnet programs, or turn them down, your accumulated wait list points will be removed. This is a game-changer.
Also new, if your home school is listed as Program Improvement status (most middle and high schools are), you may now select Option B and apply to BOTH the NCLB-PSC program (the District will select ONE non-PI school assignment for you) AND up to three Magnet choices. In previous years you could only apply to one or the other program option.

If you are hunting for a middle school and live on the Westside, come to a free Westside Middle School Forum where ten area middle schools will present under one roof on Thursday, October 18 at 6p at Coeur d’Alene Elementary School in Venice.
