Today is the first day of National Cereal Week. To celebrate, we’re giving away a month’s supply of cereal from General Mills (a case with 12 boxes). I visited General Mills Headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota last week and was able to try many different types of cereal including these Halloween options.
I like General Mills cereals because they have gluten-free options and their cereals contain whole grains. We eat mostly organic and I buy foods with as few ingredients as possible. I buy “Natural” cereals when I go grocery shopping at Trader Joe’s and Sprouts, and General Mills when I’m at Target. I recently compared my “Natural” cereal with General Mills and found that they had almost exactly the same ingredients (but the natural cereals contained natural dyes) except that General Mills had slightly more fiber. Honestly, I mostly like them for their stance on social issues. General Mills has come out in support of Gay Marriage, even giving wedding cakes through Betty Crocker to the first three gay couples who were married when it became legal on Aug. 1, 2013. Plus they released this video on October 4, that celebrates all families. And we all know about how they didn’t back down when haters came out against their adorable Cheerios ad that featured a mixed race couple.
Speaking of Cheerios, When I visited General Mills I was treated to an amazing breakfast bar with ingredients to make different Cheerios combinations. There was Cherrios with blueberries, lemon zest, and honey, Cheerios with greek yogurt, salted caramel, mango, and almonds, and my favorite, Cherrios with yogurt, banana, and warm peanut butter (pictured below with chocolate pretzels). Everything was served with either yogurt or a selection of milks – almond, peanut butter, soy, and of course, cow’s milk.
After the fabulous breakfast and a tour of the facility, I learned about the Hello Cereal Lovers campaign. It’s where people can share their love of cereal and get ideas for what to do with their cereal. One of the fun projects was to have celebrity chefs make original meals with the cereal. A group of Minnesota food bloggers joined the visit and we all tried the recipes that the chefs came up with. My favorite was the chilaquiles on the bottom left.
Then we had a tour of the Betty Crocker kitchens. The most fun was touring the prop room where there were endless bowls, napkins, and mats to make food pictures look amazing.
The bloggers and I met the Betty Crocker Kitchen chefs who create recipes for magazines and websites. Then we learned that we would be chefs for a day. We were given the challenge of making a dish out of cereal just like the celebrity chefs did for Hello Cereal Lovers. It was a little intimidating to be with a group of food bloggers and then asked to create a recipe off the top of my head. We were given plates of vegetables, meat, and cheese and access to cereal including Chex, Wheaties, and Cheerios.
If we hadn’t already had chilaquiles for lunch, I would have made that, so I had to come up with something else. I ended up making Calabacitas, with green chile, corn, peppers, and chorizo that I baked with Corn Chex and cheese. It tasted really good (but what doesn’t taste good with chorizo in it?) and is pictured below in the top left corner. I’ll post the recipe tomorrow.
We tried all of each other’s dishes and they were amazing. Those food bloggers really know what they’re doing. I was especially impressed by One Tomato, Two Tomato’s Tammy Kimbler, who not only roasted peppers, but also made a delicious smoky sauce and a lovely chicken salad to be stuffed in the peppers.
