Universal Studios Hollywood is celebrating the Year of the Dog from Saturday, February 10th through Sunday, February 25th. The fun takes place at a special piazza at the center of theme park under red Chinese lanterns and plum blossom Wishing Trees. DreamWorks’ Kung Fu Panda characters will be on hand as well as Hello Kitty, Mandarin-speaking Transformer MEGATRON, an interactive Dragon Warrior Training Show based on the Kung Fu Panda franchise, and more. The Port of Los Angeles invites families to celebrate the Year of the Dog on Saturday, February 10th from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. This free event includes lots of fun, family-friendly activities including face painting, a petting zoo, arts and crafts, live entertainment, and more.
Whale of a Weekend

The Santa Monica Pier Aquarium is hosting “Whale of a Weekend” on Saturday, February 10th and Sunday, February 11th from 12:30 pm to 5:00 pm each day. This special event celebrates the migration of the Pacific gray whales. Lots of hands-on activities are planned such as touching whale baleen and trying on simulated whale blubber. There will also be face painting, arts and crafts, story times, presentations, and more. Events are included in admission ($5 for adults and children 13 and older; free for children 12 and younger).

The city of San Gabriel invites you to its annual Lunar New Year Festival happening on Saturday, February 10th from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm. Celebrate the Year of the Dog at this free festival which includes live music and dance performances, food trucks, crafts, a kids zone, and more.
Oh Freedom! The Story of the Underground Railroad

The Lewis Family Playhouse invites families to Oh Freedom! The Story of the Underground Railroad, a play with music based on historical events. The performance combines “stories of the men and women who were active in the fight against slavery with songs of the period.” The production is recommended for children 10 and older. Performances are scheduled for Saturday, February 10th, (at 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm) and Sunday, February 11th (at 1:00 pm). Tickets are available online.
Families can enjoy two free events at the Wallis on Sunday, February 11th. From 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm, participate in “Salsa Sunday,” — a family-friendly Salsa dance class taught by Gustavo Vargas from the Debbie Allen Dance Academy. After that, enjoy the Story Pirates at 2:30 pm. “The Story Pirates celebrate the words and ideas of the kids of L.A.” You’ll enjoy actors and comedians performing stories written by kids from all around the country as well as new stories written by children in the audience. Recommended for children 3-12.
True Pablove: A Family Valentine’s Celebration

Attend Pablove’s “True Pablove: A Family Valentine’s Celebration” on Sunday, February 11th from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. This special event includes “family fun, incredible arts and crafts, delicious treats, amazing auction items, guest DJs, and much more.” Attendance helps support the important work of the Pablove Foundation. Advance tickets are available for $75 and are $90 at the door. Children 2 and younger are free.
6th Annual Valentine-Making, Bingo-Playing Community Dinner

Big Sunday wants to be sure no one is forgotten on Valentine’s Day, so on Sunday, February 11th from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, volunteers will be creating cards and gift bags for shut-ins and people facing a tough time. There will also be a fun game of bingo and a community dinner. All ages are welcome to participate. Non-perishable food items (such as soups, canned meats, cereal, beans, jelly, and peanut butter) are also being collected for Covenant House. RSVP online.
