Things To Do in Los Angeles with Kids March 15-17, 2024

You won’t run out of fun things to do with your kids this weekend March 15th – March 17th. Attend Girls in STEM Days at the Natural History Museum, celebrate at the Hermosa Beach St. Patrick’s Day Parade, participate in César Chávez Family Day at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes, enjoy Sierra Madre’s annual Wistaria Festival, and much more!

Butterfly Season

Butterfly Season comes to Kidspace Children’s Museum on Thursday, March 14th and runs until Sunday, May 19th. “This colorful celebration of butterflies and pollinators and the role they play in our Southern California ecosystem is more vibrant than ever before.” You’ll find many butterfly-themed experiences throughout the museum including art projects, fantasy flutter-by play (“dress up like a butterfly, sit in a ‘chrysalis,’ and take your picture with a beautiful set of monarch wings”), and more. Hawaiian Gardens Library

Hawaiian Gardens Library is hosting a special program for Women’s History Month on Friday, March 15th from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. “Buttons played an important role in the campaign for women’s suffrage. Make buttons with us to encourage the next generation of history makers.” For ages 8-17. Advance registration is required as attendance is limited.

Drop-in Workshop for Teens: Foley Art

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is hosting a Drop-in Workshop for Teens on Friday, March 15th at 4:30 pm. Teens will “explore Foley art in our sound booth and Foley room in the Shirley Temple Education Studio, using different objects and techniques to create sounds matching various clips from Oscar-winning films.” Workshops are designed for teens 14 and older. Snacks will be provided. (Workshops are included with museum admission which is free for youth 17 and younger with an advance reservation.)

Gloria Steinem: Finding Her Voice

Learn about Gloria Steinem at the San Gabriel Library on Friday, March 15th from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Then, “decorate your own sunglasses, like the ones Gloria wears, with a motivational and empowering phrase using word beads and other supplies.” Recommended for teens ages 12-17.

“Principal Conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra Thomas Wilkins leads the LA Phil in John Williams’ triumphant score to the 1978 film Superman” on Friday, March 15th at 8:00 pm. “Wilkins and the LA Phil perform the score live-to-picture while the film plays in high definition on the big screen.” (Note – children under 6 will not be admitted.) Star Wars and SDI: Defending America and the Galaxy

Star Wars and SDI: Defending America and the Galaxy is the newest exhibition at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, opening Friday, March 15th and on display until September 8th, 2024. Back in 1983, President Reagan spoke to the nation announcing “his intention to embark upon groundbreaking research into a national defense system that could make nuclear weapons obsolete, called the Strategic Defense Initiative, or SDI.” Soon the program became known as “Star Wars.” This exhibition includes “both the real-world technology of SDI, as well as items from the movie phenomenon.” Families will view original SDI items as well as props, costumes, and art from the Star Wars franchise including an original script, a Landspeeder made for  A New Hope, and Princess Leia’s Ceremonial Dress.” Tickets are available online. 

El Capitan Theatre: Mary Poppins

From Friday, March 15th through Thursday, March 21st, the El Capitan Theatre presents the always-delightful Mary Poppins starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. Screening times, and tickets, are available online. (The movie is rated G.)

2024 Arbor Day Celebration

Families are invited to participate in the 2024 Arbor Day Celebration happening at Sylmar Park on Saturday, March 16th from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. “Roll up your sleeves, grab a shovel, and enjoy a free, fun-filled day of family-friendly activities.” The volunteer tree-planting event also includes live music, food, face painting, and more. Little Sparks: My Car + Me

The Petersen Automotive Museum is hosting “Little Sparks: My Car + Me” on Saturday, March 16th from 9:00 am to 10:00 am. Little Sparks (children ages 3-6) can explore the world of cars through games, creating artwork, and enjoying the museum collection. On Saturday, children will “learn all of the important steps of taking care of a car from learning to drive to taking your car to the car wash.” This activity is included in general admission. Seed Mosaics for Kids (& Adults)

The City of Santa Monica is hosting a special event in Ishihara Park Learning Garden on Saturday, March 16th from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. Start off with some Pancakes in the Park and then have some fun creating Seed Mosaics. “How often do you get to make an art project that can be planted, grown, eventually eaten (?) and certainly composted?” This is a free activity and is open to everyone. Monarch Day of Action

The City of Long Beach is hosting Monarch Day of Action on Saturday, March 16th from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Volunteers will be working to expand the Monarch Habitat, by “planting native California Sagebrush, Buckwheat, and Narrowleaf Milkweed.” The event will also include live music, crafts, and the chance to meet with local community organizations. 

Nothin’ But Sand Beach Cleanup
Toes Beach – Playa del Rey

Spend time at the beach, participating in Heal the Bay’s Nothin’ But Sand Beach Cleanup event happening on Saturday, March 16th from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Recent rains have caused hundreds of pounds of harmful trash to wash up on our beaches. Volunteers are needed to help rid the beach of harmful plastic pollution and trash. Register online. 

Pat Nixon Day of Service

Pat Nixon Day of Service is happening on Saturday, March 16th starting at 10:00 am. The day is a celebration of First Lady Pat Nixon’s 112th Birthday. “Every year on her birthday the Richard Nixon Foundation hosts the Pat Nixon Day of Service, inviting the public to the Nixon Library to learn about and get involved with organizations and charities that Mrs. Nixon championed before, during, and after her tenure as First Lady.” Special programs are planned throughout the day, including a wreath-laying ceremony at 11:00 am. Additionally, the Nixon Library will be offering free admission all day. 

Solar Eclipse Family Program

Woodland Hills Branch Library is holding a Solar Eclipse Family Program on Saturday, March 16th at 11:00 am. Families are invited to learn about the solar eclipse happening on April 8th. Additionally, solar eclipse glasses will be provided (while supplies last).

SCALE: The Next Generation

SCALE: The Next Generation, a youth-focused tech event, is happening on Saturday, March 16th from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. This special event includes “sessions by students on everything from digital art to building games to computer vision to robotics and mechatronics and 3D design and printing.” All sessions will be presented by students in grades 6-12. Additionally, attendees can spend time in The Next Generation (TNG) Playground to get hands-on experience with a variety of things including 3D printing, AI and generative art, and more. Hermosa Beach St. Patrick’s Day Parade

The Hermosa Beach St. Patrick’s Day Parade is happening on Saturday, March 16th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Back for its 28th year, the Parade will feature local non-profits, bands, unique vehicles, and more. After the parade, head down to the Pier for musical performances happening from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. A map of the event is available online.

Vroman’s Bookstore is hosting two Special Storytimes this Saturday, March 16th. At 11:00 am, Marcia & Kori Withers will present Grandma’s Hands, “a timeless, universal song originally featured on Bill Withers’s 1971 album, Just As I Am.” “Award-winning artist R. Gregory Christie has brought the iconic song to life through vibrant illustrations, painting a tender portrait of Bill’s grandmother.” Bill Withers’s wife, Marcia, and their daughter, Kori, will participate in the book reading, a conversation, and signing of their picture book. 
And at 4:00 pm, Ann Suk Wang will present The House Before Falling Into the Sea, a picture book about a child and her family taking in refugees during the Korean War and the idea of “courage and what it really means to care for your neighbors.” The story offers an important message: “We’re stronger when we have each other, and the kindness we show one another in the darkest of times is a gift we’ll never regret.” 

Making Monsters with Mary Doodles

The Getty Villa is hosting a special family-friendly workshop on Saturday, March 16th from 11:00 am to 3:30 pm. Illustrator and YouTube artist Mary Doodles will be on-hand as participants “use drawing materials, inspiration from Getty Villa artworks, and your imagination to create scary, friendly, or silly monsters.” This all-ages program is held in hour-long sessions three times throughout the day at 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, and 2:30 pm. Mermaid Month 2024

March is Mermaid Month at Ventura Harbor Village, and the festivities begin on Saturday, March 16th. Mermaids and mermen are invited to the kick-off event on Saturday from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm. The fun includes mermaid meet-and-greets, a dance party, a mermaid craft station, the chance to learn about the ocean in special interactive activities, and more. Women’s History Month: Planting a Historical Seed

Visit the San Fernando Library on Saturday, March 16th from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm for a special Women’s History Month event. Tweens and teens (ages 12-18) will learn about Dolores Huerta and the United Farm Workers and have the opportunity to plant seeds in a container which they will then take home. 
This event is also happening at the Pico Rivera Library on Saturday, March 16th from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm. 

Ms. Bits N’ Bobs Visits The Land of Imagination

Weekend Short Cuts: Oscar-Winning Animated Short Films

Spring Spectacular 2024

The Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College is hosting its Spring Spectacular event this weekend, Saturday, March 16th and Sunday, March 17th. This special fundraiser celebrates the work of the Zoo’s 2nd-year students. Special shows and activities are planned including Eye to Eye Wildlife Presentations (at 11 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm) and Discovery Stations (available all day). There are several fun, family-friendly events happening this weekend at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. On Saturday, May 16th, there is a 10:00 am and an 11:30 am performance of Carnival of the Animals. “Experience composer Camille Saint-Saëns’ beloved children’s classic like you’ve never seen it before, with colorful and engaging puppets, captivating music, and playful storytelling.” Additionally, enjoy pre- or post-concert fun with special children’s activities including a craft station, a coloring station, and S.T.E.A.M. station. Activities start at 9:00 am for 10:00 am concertgoers and 12:15 pm for 11:30 am concertgoers. Tickets are available online. 
The Beckman Arts and Science Festival takes place on Saturday, March 16th from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm. This free event “invites innovators of all ages to explore the connections between science and the arts through fun and engaging performances, interactive exhibits, and hands-on activities along with other festival food and fun.”
And, on Saturday, March 16th and Sunday, March 17th families are invited to experience Paper Planet and “create a beautiful world inside a forest of tall cardboard trees, using only paper, tape, and their imaginations. Everyone plays together in this magical place to create creatures, plants, costumes, characters, stories, and adventures.” This is a fully interactive experience, meaning there is no seating. Each session is different, as Paper Planet builds and grows as more and more families visit. Details and ticket information are available online. 

S.T.E.A.M. Fest Express

The S.T.E.A.M. Fest Express is happening at Southern California Railway Museum on Saturday, March 16th and Sunday, March 17th. This special outdoor, interactive experience features Buddy the Dinosaur (from the PBS SoCal Kids Show Dinosaur Train) “meeting his fans and highlighting his favorite topics of Paleontology, Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math.” Activities include meet-and-greets with Buddy, STEAM-themed arts and crafts, train rides, trolley rides, and more. Girls in STEM Days

Girls in STEM Days is happening at the Natural History Museum on Saturday, March 16th and Sunday, March 17th from 11 am to 3 pm each day. Girls ages 8-18 are invited to participate in a variety of STEM activities and “explore future career paths in a fun and engaging way.” The special event takes place in the Museum’s Nature Gardens and includes music, a scavenger hunt, a presentation “featuring a panel discussion with NHM women scientists sharing their journey and pathways into science,” and the chance to meet with and interact with a number of local STEM-based organizations. This event is included in general Museum admission. Tickets are available online. 

St Patrick’s Day Farm-to-Table Cookout Tour

Tanaka Farms invites families to a special St. Patrick’s Day themed U-Pick Tour happening on Saturday, March 16th and Sunday, March 17th from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm each day. Take a tractor-pulled wagon ride around the farm, pick your own produce, and visit the Barnyard Animals. Then, sit down in the picnic area and enjoy a classic St. Patrick’s Day meal including corned beef, cabbage, California Colcannon (mashed potatoes with greens), and more. Reservations are available online. (Adults 13 & up: $49; Children 4-12: $29; No charge for children 3 and younger.)

Family Matinee: Alice in Wonderland (IB Tech Print)

As part of its Family Matinee program, New Beverly Cinema is screening Alice in Wonderland on Saturday, March 16th and Sunday, March 17th at 2:00 pm each day. The 1951 Disney film is a “timeless Disney delight in vibrant I.B. Technicolor.” Tickets are available online.

St. Patrick’s Day Outdoor Volunteer Day
White Point Nature Preserve

Families are invited to participate in a special “Green” volunteer day on St. Patrick’s Day at White Point Nature Preserve. From 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, volunteering families will be “working to maintain the preserve’s restoration area of native plant species to improve critical habitat for wildlife at the preserve, and beautify outdoor natural space for the community.” Sign-up online.

Butterfly Pavilion

The annual Butterfly Pavilion returns to the Natural History Museum on Sunday, March 17th. “This springtime exhibition features hundreds of butterflies, colorful native plants, and plenty of natural light to help you see these creatures shimmer.” Look closely and you’ll also see all stages of the butterfly life cycle including eggs, caterpillars, and chrysalises. Timed tickets are required and are available online. (The Butterfly Pavilion will be at the Museum until August 25th, 2024.)

Wistaria Festival 2024

The Annual Wistaria Festival is happening on Sunday, March 17th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The Festival includes more than 100 crafters and food vendors, the Sierra Madre Auto Show, and of course, the opportunity to celebrate and enjoy “the Guinness Book of World Records Wistaria Vine.” Shuttle tickets are available online.

Zoo Birthday Party

Visit the Santa Ana Zoo on Sunday, March 17th from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm for a special event, the Zoo’s Birthday Party. The fun includes an all-zoo scavenger hunt, animal education activities, and the chance to see the animals get “birthday enrichment treats.” Plus, admission is free to City of Santa Ana residents (proof of residency is required). (Admission is $13 for visitors 13 and older, $10 for children ages 3-12 and seniors 60+)

LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes is hosting César Chávez Family Day on Sunday, March 17th starting at 12:00 noon. “Learn about the fight for farm labor rights through a celebration of activist and labor leader, César Chávez.” Activities include musical and dance performances, art and garden workshops, and more. St. Patrick’s Day Celebration

The Original Farmers Market is hosting a St. Patrick’s Day Celebration on Sunday, March 17th from 12:30 pm to 6:00 pm. Glen the Bagpiper will be strolling throughout the aisles from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm, and from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, The Merry Minstrels will be performing their traditional Irish folk music. Plus, “Magee’s Kitchen, the Market’s first eatery, will be serving their world famous corned beef, cabbage, and potato plate all day long.”

Families are invited to “ride, bike, skate, and experience the new protected bike lanes and safety features on Reseda Boulevard” on Sunday, March 17th from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Enjoy guided group bike rides on Reseda as well as routes through the surrounding neighborhoods. There will also be music, street games, and other activities. The West Valley Regional Branch Library invites families to a Nowruz Celebration on Sunday, March 17th from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Nowruz, a celebration of the beginning of Spring, includes “traditional Persian music performances, Nowruz dances by renowned artists, and crafts for kids.”
