Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA

In celebration of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, fifty museums in southern California are offering free admission on Sunday, September 17th. Some of the participating museums include the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA), Japanese American National Museum, Autry Museum of the American West, and many more. (Check the website for a full list of participating museums). Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA is a “diverse array of exhibitions, public events and performances that explore Latin American and Latino art.” Pacific Standard Time will serve as an “exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles” and will continue through January 2018.

The 15th Annual Tarfest is happening on Saturday, September 16th. Tarfest is a free music and art festival for all ages. Festivities include live musical performances, live paintings, kids’ activity tables, gourmet food trucks, and more. (All the while, the La Brea Tar Pits and Museum will be open during regular business hours). Tarfest hours are from 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

Big Sunday is hosting its 5th annual fall book collection on Sunday, September 17th from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Big Sunday is collecting new and gently-used books that will then be donated to nonprofit organizations. Books can be dropped off at the event or before during Big Sunday’s regular business hours. (They are especially seeking children’s books!). Families can help count, sort, and box the books, and then enjoy bagels and pastries! And don’t forget, you can also contribute non-perishable, unexpired food to assist the End of the Month Club program. (This month, Big Sunday is collecting for People Assisting the Homeless). You can RSVP online.

The United Way’s Fall Into Literacy Book Festival

Families are invited to the United Way’s Fall Into Literacy Book Festival on Saturday, September 16th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. This year’s theme, Viva Los Libros, “combines the cultural importance of Fiestas Patrias, a celebration of independence for Mexico, Chile, and Guatemala, and also promotes literacy, education, and basic-needs resources for residents and guests of the underserved community.” More than 40 exhibitors will be on hand (including the Los Angeles Rams mascot). There will also be live musical and dance performances, author signings, live readings, and much more. Each family will also receive a free book to take home

Mexican Independence Day

Head downtown to El Pueblo Historical Monument on Saturday, September 16th and Sunday, September 17th to celebrate Mexican Independence Day. The festivities are scheduled from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm each day and feature live musical and dance performances, cultural activities, food, exhibits, historic displays, and much more.

2nd Annual Open Arts and Music Festival

The 2nd Annual Open Arts and Music Festival is happening on Saturday, September 16th from 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm. This free event includes musical performances, hands-on activities for children, a public art installation, and more. Check the website for a schedule of events.

Coastal Cleanup Day 2017

Coastal Cleanup Day is on Saturday, September 16th from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Families have a chance to get out and help keep our coast clean during this worldwide event. There are multiple locations throughout Los Angeles county participating in this important event. You can register online. All ages are welcome to participate.
