“Airplane!” Lands in Beverly Hills: Zucker Brothers Return for a Comedy Double Feature

Clear your schedule and tighten your seatbelts—on Sunday, July 20, the Fine Arts Theatre Beverly Hills is hosting a comedy double feature that promises to be anything but routine. Legendary director-producers David and Jerry Zucker are landing in person for screenings of their genre-defining hits Top Secret! and Airplane!, complete with a live Q&A and book signing.

Yes, those Zuckers. The brothers behind the absurd, deadpan brilliance of Airplane!, The Naked Gun, and countless comedy classics. They’ll be live and in conversation between the films, sharing stories and signing copies of their book, Surely You Can’t Be Serious: The True Story of Airplane!, co-written with longtime collaborator Jim Abrahams.

The lineup kicks off with Top Secret!, their delightfully chaotic 1984 send-up of Elvis musicals and WWII spy flicks. It stars Val Kilmer (in his feature debut, no less) as a rockabilly crooner who finds himself tangled in resistance movements and espionage. Then comes Airplane!, the film that redefined the parody genre with a perfectly cast ensemble and a now-legendary sequence of sight gags, quotable lines, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as a co-pilot. Need we say more?

Tickets are $15, and considering the caliber of comedy and the rare chance to hear directly from the filmmakers, that’s a deal straight out of 1980. The event kicks off at 2 p.m. and takes place at the historic Fine Arts Theatre on Wilshire and La Cienega, which has undergone a Deco-glam restoration worthy of its silver screen nostalgia.

Heads-up: the book signing is with purchase only, and while walk-ups might squeeze in, you’ll want to grab tickets in advance online or via the theatre’s app. Free parking sweetens the deal (Beverly Hills miracles do happen), and there’s plenty of charm to the venue’s retro vibe.

Whether you’re a comedy buff, a film nerd, or just need an excuse to laugh until your face hurts, this is one screening where you’ll want to stay for the credits.
