Beyond Tablet — Change Your Play!

We are always up for a trip to Manhattan and when Jersey Family Fun was invited to try out a new tablet, Beyond Tablet, my kids couldn’t wait! When I read that Beyond Tablet would help develop skills and NOT just be another tablet to encourage zombie-like behavior, I was all in. Beyond Tablet is new to the market just this past June and won the CES (The Consumer Technology Association’s annual show) 2017 Innovation Award. High honors for a new product!

Beyond Tablet at Children's Museum in Manhattan

We joined other family bloggers at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan for an afternoon of Beyond Tablet play hosted by the game’s inventor and guided by some game experts. I was surprised to see it’s not a tablet like you might think; it’s more like an electronic board game base with no screen! I liked that because we certainly have enough screens around here.

John Shi, the inventor of Beyond Tablet was motivated to create a game that the entire family would enjoy. Using music, bright colors, and new characters, the Beyond Tablet encourages logical thinking and is designed to improve cognitive ability. After playing for just under an hour, the kids were starting to understand the games and the objectives. They each played a different game suitable for their age level with other kids at the event. There were some helpers walking around to help them play, but my impression was they didn’t quite know how to play the games exactly. It didn’t matter much though, they enjoyed what they were able to do. I’ll let them tell you all about their experience themselves!

My 11-year-old’s Beyond Tablet Review

I played Elemencery, a Beyond Tablet game, first with my brother (7 years old) and then with a fellow tween. It was a challenging game and the inventor told us it was the most challenging of all the available games. The objective of the game is to get 5 of your color cards on the 3×3 arena. First, you choose a creature card to put down, and the board knows what card it is. Based on how many points you have, the game will tell you if that’s a good card to put down. The game is sort of hard to figure out, but we had fun playing it. I haven’t ever played anything like it!

My 7-year-old’s Beyond Tablet review

I played Beyond Tablet’s game of Lost Pyramid (ages 4 and up). The point of the game was to listen to what the board said. It would tell you to put down a red scorpion, red staff, red potion, or another card. If you got all of them right with only three hints you win. Once you finish one game you go up a level. I had fun playing it and up to four people could play together!

Both of my children had an interest in the tablet, and I could see it holding their attention for an hour at least. I didn’t get an opportunity to play that day, but Beyond Tablet’s games are designed for multiple players — parents are welcome!

What You Should Know About the Beyond Tablet Game

  • The tablet is priced at $199, and 5 games are included. There are 12 games available — most for ages 3 and up but some suitable for only 6 and up.
  • Directions are spoken by the board. If you’re in a loud room or need to keep quiet you can use the headphone jack to play.
  • The games we saw didn’t require reading skills, so the game will be great for little ones.

We just unpacked beyond tablet and cannot figure out how to get more than two players active during a game. If you know please share. Thank you
