California Avocado Month Preview at Grand Central Market
June is California Avocado Month and to celebrate Grand Central Market chefs have created special items featuring avocado. You can try these specially created dishes all month long. I was able to sample some of the items last week as a guest of California Avocado Commission.
I love avocados and eating at Grand Central Market so I was in heaven during the tour. We started our evening at Belcampo Meat Co. where we were served a California Avocado and Heirloom Tomato Salad. It had burrata, Belcampo bacon and basil with a vinaigrette dressing.
Our next stop was Fernando Villagomez’s La Tostaderia, which I have eaten at before, for a California Avocado Toast with Seafood and Fruit Caviar. It looked amazing, but I have a strange and random allergy to cephalopods and it contained octopus so I had to pass.
But I did have a tasting at Villagomez’s carnitas stall, Las Morelianas, which I’ve always wanted to try. He served California Avocado Carnitas, which were carnitas tacos with avocado puree and a delightful salsa. It was delicious and I will definitely be back for carnitas the next time I’m at the market.
The most interesting avocado creation was from Madcapra. It was a California Avocado Smoothie with yogurt, sweetened condensed milk and lime. I could have just had that and been satisfied all day. It was like a really rich lime sherbet shake.
Everything was really good including the California Avocado Chicken Sandwich from Golden Road Brewing Company, the Wood Fire-Roasted Lump Crab Cake and Crushed California Avocado pizza from Olio and the California Avocado and Egg Tartine from Valerie Confections.
My two favorite items of the night were the Ramen Hood Avocado Toast, which was a crispy rice cake with avocado puree and sesame dressing (so good I had two) and the simple and delightful Salad with California Avocado Green Goddess Dressing from DTLA Cheese. It was so flavorful and fresh that I will definitely be going back before the end of avocado month.
The evening ended at The Horse Thief BBQ where we were served Smoked Chicken and Kale Salad with Smoked California Avocado with Avocado Dressing and a Brisket Sandwich with Smoked California Avocado Relish. I had to leave and didn’t get to try it, but it looked amazing.
Seeing all of the beautiful dishes at Grand Central Market gave me a ton of ideas about what to do with an avocado. I cook with them all the time, but I’ve never put avocado on a pizza or served it with crispy rice.If you have a chance, head to Grand Central Market during June. You will leave full and happy.
