Where To Celebrate National Book Lover’s Day

National Book Lover’s Day is August 9th. And the best way to celebrate is by taking the kids to some of the best children’s bookstores and independent bookstores in and around Los Angeles.

Children’s Book World

Children’s Book World has it all — over 80,000 titles as well as music, science kits, craft kits, and more. They’ve been in business since 1986 and are known for their friendly and knowledgeable staff. They also host special events each Saturday morning; you can check their website for information about their upcoming schedule. (They are closed on Sundays).

Books and Cookies
2309 Main St., Santa Monica, CA 90405

Books and Cookies is a local favorite. The store is divided into three different areas —  The Bookstore/Interactive Reading Room, the Enrichment Center (the site of a variety of classes and story times), and the Learn and Play Area (an inside and outside space where kids can dress up, build, play with bubbles, and more). San Marino Toy and Book Shoppe
2476 Huntington Dr., San Marino, CA 91108

Doing business since 1975, the San Marino Toy and Book Shoppe is a neighborhood shop featuring children’s books and educational toys. They also offer free gift-wrapping as well.

Once Upon a Time
2207 Honolulu Ave., Montrose, CA 91020

Once Upon a Time is known as “your family bookstore” and was established in 1966. They host a variety of book clubs, each one targeted for different age groups as well as weekly story times. They carry a large selection of children’s books as well as unique gift items.

This independent book store offers it all — author events, children’s story times, book clubs, workshops, and more. Knowledgable staff and well-organized book displays are a few of the reasons customers return again and again. In addition, children’s story time is offered Monday mornings at 10:30 am and select Saturday mornings at 11:00 am.

Chevalier’s Books
126 N. Larchmont Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90004

You’ll find Chevalier’s Books in Larchmont Village. They’ve been in business since 1940 and are well-known in the community. You’ll find helpful booksellers able to make personal recommendations. They host a variety of author events as well as a weekly Saturday morning children’s story time.

Vroman’s Bookstore
695 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena, CA 91101

Founded in 1894, Vroman’s Bookstore is the “oldest and largest independent bookstore in Southern California.”  Each year, Vroman’s hosts more than 400 events including children’s story times, book launch parties and signings, and more. The children’s section is housed on the second floor of the store. They offer weekly story times, a monthly craft time, a book club, and a summer reading program as well.

Book Soup
8818 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, CA 90069

Book Soup describes itself as the “Bookseller to the Great and Infamous.” In business since 1975, you’ll find much that catches your eye among their floor to ceiling shelves. (There are over 60,000 titles after all). Book Soup hosts a variety of author events, offers many autographed books, and has a special kids section as well.

Flintridge Bookstore and Coffeehouse
1010 Foothill Blvd., La Canada, CA 91011

You’ll find a selection of books and speciality items here at this independent book store. Flintridge Bookstore hosts a special Teen Advisory Board, with more information available online. Their calendar also includes a variety of readings and author signings as well as a special children’s story time each Saturday morning.

The Last Bookstore
453 S. Spring St. (entrance is on 5th St.)
Los Angeles, CA 90013

The Last Bookstore is California’s largest new and used bookstore. They occupy 20,000 square feet of space and feature more than two hundred thousand books! In addition, you and your kids will marvel at the many “extras,” including a “tunnel” made out of books. You can spend hours wandering around (but just be forewarned that there are no restrooms).

Diesel, A Bookstore

Customers describe Diesel as a “cute bookstore.” They have a dedicated children’s section and helpful staff to assist you. They host a variety of author events throughout the year.

Skylight Books
1818 N. Vermont Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90027

Established in 1996, Skylight Books is an independent bookstore offering an eclectic selection of adult books as well as a special children’s section. They host a variety of special events including readings, discussions, and author signings.
