Dating My Husband – Staycation at the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa

The last couple of years, my husband and I have been lucky enough to do #Dateweek where we shipped our boys off to the grandparents and went out every night for a week. It didn’t work out this year so we had to cram everything into 24 hours. We paddle-boarded, had a couples massage, stayed in a great hotel, and went out to a fabulous dinner — all thanks to the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa and Carlsbad Lagoon. This post was first published in 2015.

My family was initially invited to learn about the great kids’ activities at the resort. It’s right next to Legoland and during the month of October, kids staying at the Sheraton can get into Legoland free with a paid adult. It’s a great family hotel, one that friends have stayed at year after year, but we decided to go on a couples staycation (don’t tell my kids!) to celebrate our anniversary early.

We started our day at Carlsbad Lagoon where we paddle boarded in the beautiful lagoon. There were some jetskiers, but other than that the water was very calm.

We had the best time. It was really calm water so we could paddle fast or stop and watch the jumping fish. There were a couple of sweet little beaches and we stopped at one, easily getting on and off our paddle boards (happy to report that I didn’t fall in the water, but I did jump in because it was such a warm day).

After paddle boarding, we hung out by the pool at the Sheraton, which is only about 15 minutes away. The pool was big and beautiful and very clean (very important for a pool with lots of kids going in and out of it). Perfect for kids and great for us to lounge and enjoy a cocktail.

Then it was time for the most relaxing part of the day. We had a couples massage.

I usually choose a facial when I go to a spa, but it sounded very romantic to have a couples massage. It wasn’t terribly romantic, but it did feel incredible. My massage therapist asked me if anything was bothering me and I said my shoulders and neck. She did an excellent job of working out all the kinks and spent a lot of time working on my busted shoulder. Amazing. What was really fantastic was that my husband’s therapist did a great job as well so we both left very happy and relaxed.

After another visit to the pool, we watched the sunset from the lovely patio in our room.

Once the sun was down, we went to dinner at the Twenty/20 grill and wine bar.

My husband has Celiac and dining can be a problem in some places, but not here. They carry Stella Artois Cidre and had plenty of gluten-free options marked on the menu. I had a delicious free-range chicken with creamy garlic polenta, swiss chard, and bacon that I really didn’t want to share until I tried my husband’s scallops with corn puree. Everything was delightful including my Pisco Sour.

Once we were back in the room, we bought Love & Mercy, the Brian Wilson biopic on pay per view to watch in our comfy bed (Highly recommend it. Really well done).

We had to leave early in the morning to get back to our kids who were staying the night with friends so we didn’t get in a full 24 hours, but we were able to do so much. We had a wonderful time and we’re definitely going back to the Sheraton Carlsbad. It’s perfect for families and in a great location.

Disclosure: A portion of the trip was given to me for review purposes and some of it we paid for like the food and drinks and my husband’s portion of the massage (and of course the tips!). All opinions are my own.
