Family Festivals at Bowers: Free Culture, Crafts, and Frozen Treats

Looking for something easy, enriching, and actually free to do with your kids on a Sunday? The Bowers Museum in Santa Ana continues its tradition of monthly Free Family Festivals, offering hands-on art, live performances, and tasty treats—all tucked inside their stunning Key Courtyard. The next two fests are already teed up, and they’re both worth a spot on your summer calendar.

Up Next: Pacific Islands Festival

Sunday, July 13 | 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.

This fest is all about island vibes—with an immersive lineup celebrating the cultures of Hawaii, Polynesia, and beyond. Think Gyotaku fish printing, Haku Lei flower crowns, and frozen tropical fruit bars (while supplies last, so don’t sleep in).

Live performances keep things moving throughout the day:

12:00 PM: Hula by Halau Hula Lani Ola

12:30 PM & 1:30 PM: Polynesian dance by students of Tupua

1:15 PM: Hawaiian music by Kama’aina Glee Club (in the adjacent courtyard)

2:30 PM: Cultural dance by Kutturan CHamoru

Face painting and art stations run the full four hours, and everything—from the leis to the performances—is included, no tickets or registration needed.

Also Coming Up: Rock’n Blues Festival

Sunday, August 3 | 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Details are still under wraps for this one, but based on past events, expect live bands, paint-splattered crafts, and a crowd of music-loving families vibing to bluesy riffs. If your kids are into rhythm (or just banging on anything vaguely drum-like), this will be their jam.

Why It’s a Local Favorite

There’s something charmingly throwback about these Bowers Sundays. No corporate bloat, no ticketing hassle—just good art, good music, and families genuinely having a good time. It’s an ideal outing if you’re trying to avoid screens, overstimulation, or overpriced experiences that leave you more tired than when you arrived.

Bonus: You’re already at a museum. After the festival, duck inside to catch an exhibit, grab a coffee, or just enjoy the air conditioning.

The festivals are held every first Sunday, thanks to the Nicholas Endowment. Bring sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, and a curious spirit. Get more info at Bowers.org.
