Family Fundays Return to Theatricum Botanicum

If your kid’s imagination is currently operating at full speed—and your weekend patience is… not—Topanga Canyon might have your Sunday morning solution. Family Fundays are back at Will Geer’s Theatricum Botanicum, offering a weekly dose of interactive storytelling that’s equal parts whimsical, witty, and wonderfully weird.

Held on the outdoor mainstage at 10:30 a.m. every Sunday, these one-hour shows are geared toward kids under 8 but clever enough to keep older siblings and parents entertained too. It’s the kind of programming that ditches the plastic princesses and leans into folklore, classic fables, and a little Shakespearean flair—with enough audience participation to make everyone feel like they’re part of the story.

What’s Onstage

Each week brings a new tale with live performance, music, and kid-powered plot twists. Expect mischief, magic, and maybe even a fairy king or two.

Here’s what’s coming up:

June 15: How to Catch a Hobgoblin
A Puck-ish romp through English folklore with fairies, tricksters, and make-believe. (Fans of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, take note.)

June 22: The Fisherman and the Genie
A tale from One Thousand and One Nights with wishes, wit, and some serious problem-solving required from the audience.

June 29: Rumpelstiltskin
Mischief meets mystery as kids help crack the imp’s name before time runs out.

July 6: The Ballad of Tam Lin
A shapeshifting rescue story rooted in Scottish folklore. Spoiler: there are animals. Many animals.

July 13: The Time Thales Fell Down a Well
A stargazing philosopher takes a tumble—cue the comedy and ancient wisdom, with a side of slapstick.

July 20: The Race Between Coyote and Swordfish
Chumash lore meets high-stakes adventure under the sea. (Coyote’s counting on your help!)

August 3: Shakespeare and the Queen
A living-history mash-up where kids can ask Queen Elizabeth I and William Shakespeare anything. Yes, anything.

More About Theatricum

If you’ve never been to Theatricum Botanicum, picture a leafy amphitheater tucked into the canyon, with a stage framed by sycamores and a vibe that’s more magical woodland than theme park. It’s casual, creative, and powered by the kind of local theater magic that makes you believe hobgoblins might actually be hiding backstage.

And the best part? You get to sit back with a coffee while your kids become part of the show.

Grab a hat, pack a snack, and get ready to say “yes” when your kid asks if fairies are real. At Theatricum, they might just be.
