The Getty Villa Reopens June 27th With Resilience

The Getty Villa Museum is making a triumphant return this June, and it’s not just reopening—it’s rising from the ashes, quite literally.

After a five-month closure due to the Palisades Fire, the museum will officially welcome back visitors starting Friday, June 27. But this isn’t just a return to business as usual. The museum, nestled along Pacific Coast Highway in Pacific Palisades, is inviting Angelenos to experience a site transformed—not only by flames, but by the tireless efforts of staff, firefighters, and the surrounding community.

On January 7, when the Palisades Fire threatened the property, 17 Getty staff members stayed behind to protect the Villa. Their quick actions—sealing galleries and extinguishing spot fires—helped save the treasured site. And yes, that included some serious mop-up: over 1,300 fire-damaged trees have since been cleared, the water system flushed, air filters replaced, and both indoor and outdoor spaces scrubbed from top to bottom.

Visitors returning this summer will notice some visual changes—less vegetation and signs of burn damage—but the soul of the Villa remains intact. And in true Getty fashion, the museum isn’t just opening its gates; it’s debuting a major exhibition, too.

The Kingdom of Pylos: Warrior-Princes of Ancient Greece launches the same day as the reopening and runs through January 2026. It’s the first major U.S. exhibition focused on the Mycenaean civilization, complete with over 230 objects ranging from ancient Greek tablets in Linear B to the jaw-dropping Pylos Combat Agate—think: prehistoric Aegean art with action-movie drama.

This summer, the Villa will operate Fridays through Mondays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with visitor capacity capped at 500 per day. Translation: reservations are essential, and yes, parking is still $25. Entry is free with timed tickets you can book online.

The Getty’s outdoor theater will also return this fall, kicking off its 19th season with Oedipus the King, Mama!—a title that promises as much sass as it does Sophocles. Meanwhile, a rich schedule of talks and programs (both online and IRL) will bring added dimension to the Kingdom of Pylos experience.

So if you’re craving an art outing with a side of resilience, the Getty Villa’s got you. After months of smoke and silence, the keys to this classical gem are clicking back into place.
