If/Then at the Pantages is a Fabulous Moms Night Out
I’m a huge fan of Idina Menzel – long before she was Adele Nazeem and had Let it Go. Defying Gravity, from the Tony Award winning Broadway musical Wicked in which she starred alongside Kristen Chenoweth, is my running music power song (the one that makes me run really fast). I think everything she does is spectacular. So when I heard that the national tour of If/Then was coming to the Pantages I gathered the ladies and bought tickets.
It did not disappoint. The story is about Elizabeth, a city planner approaching 40 who has just moved to New York City. She just out of a long, bad relationship and looking for a new life. She makes a friend (the phenomenal Tony award winner LaChanze) and hooks up with an old one (Anthony Rapp, Rent on Broadway). Then the show splits into two scenarios about the path her life would have taken if she had gone one way vs. the other.
The story was good, but the actors were amazing. LaChanze nearly steals the show (and, as I mentioned, I love Idina Menzel). It drags a bit after the intermission, but you’ll be in tears by the end. I highly recommend it. Hearing Menzel’s voice fill every space of the theatre was something I won’t forget anytime soon.
Because it was a Moms Night Out, we went to dinner before the show at Wood & Vine across the street from the theatre. We had reservations (it’s impossible to get in without one on a show night) and sat out on the patio. We shared all of our plates and most everything was good. They have a nice selection of cocktails, but I settled on the sparkling rose.
I haven’t been to dinner and a show with friends in years. We had such a good time, though, that I’m hoping we go more often (and this is in spite of rush hour traffic and parking in Hollywood).
If/Then is at the Pantages through January 3, 2016. There are great deals right now on Goldstar (This is an affiliate link, which means if you buy tickets by clicking the link, we get a percentage of the sale).
