Marvel Studios Black Panther Press Conference
Are you as excited as we are about Marvel Studios Black Panther? If you haven’t heard any of the early reviews, let me fill you in on some of the awesomeness that you can look forward to seeing. We will have a review up on the site later this week, but we were lucky enough to attend the press conference and hear from the amazing women and men behind the movie.
Marvel Studios is bringing something really big and really important to the big screen through their latest film, Black Panther. Not only is this film an action packed story, but it is going to break barriers. This movie’s cast is almost completely African American and features multiple strong female leads as well.
We got to hear from the cast regarding the excitement surrounding the film. Michael B. Jordan, who plays Erik Killmonger, said he was nervous to see Black Panther for the first time.
“It was like, man, this is what it feels like,” he said. “…I couldn’t describe that feeling before actually sitting down and watching that film. And seeing yourself on screen – not me personally, but people who looked like you – you know, empowered, and having those, you know, socially relevant themes, but in a movie that you want to sit down and watch, and you can enjoy, that Marvel does so well. So I think it was a really good balance, and everybody won; everybody did amazing, amazing jobs in performances.”
Lupita Nyong’o, who plays the fierce and independent Nakia, said she loved how the women in Black Panther were portrayed.
“Well I would say what I love about the way this film represents women is that each and every one of us is an individual – unique – and we all have our own sense of power and our own agency and we hold our own space without being pitted against each other. And I think that’s a very, very powerful message to send to children, both male and female, this idea. I think often times in movies we fall into that trap where women, – there’s very few of us – and then we are against each other,” she said.
In Wakanda, where the movie takes place, women are seen as equals. “… we really get a sense of the fabric of Wakanda as a nation and we see women alongside men and we see how much more effective a society can be if they allow women to explore their full potential.”
While at the press conference I got to see some of the amazing costumes up close. They are beautiful and when you see the film, you will really appreciate how much they represented the culture.
We also got a sneak peek at at some of the fun Black Panther merchandise.
How cute is this stuff? I say cute, but I also mean cool! How freaking cool is this stuff? The clutch and bracelet are so pretty and so true to the movie. I kinda really want that clutch. The toys they had on display are going to be a hot ticket item this year, both your sons and your daughters are going to want these bad-ass action figures. And those headphones? So dope. I’m telling you, these are going to be on Christmas lists this year.
Get ready to be blown away, Marvel Studios Black Panther is hitting theaters this Friday, February 16th.
