The idea of meditation sounds great to me. I love the idea of taking a few minutes to myself and clearing my mind. But I feel like I don’t have a few minutes. My mind is always racing and there’s always something to do. Well, it turns out that I can be doing something and meditate at the same time. I went to an event last week with Vionic footwear and took a ZenFitness30 class led by fitness expert Juliet Kaska and Dr. Jim Nicolai.
The class began with Nicolai talking about how to meditate while walking, specifically about meditating while walking a dog. This got my attention because walking our dog is one of the things that I have to do during the day. I sometimes take my phone and check email or listen to a podcast. That afternoon, I laced up my new walking shoes (thank you, Vionic), put my phone in my pocket and tried clearing my mind while walking.
Here’s how you do it:
- Take 4 short, segmented breaths in through the nose
- Take 4 short, segmented breaths out through the mouth
- Focus on your breath and do it in time with your steps
- Try to clear your mind and just focus on breathing
The process worked well for me and I’ve kept at it. I’m actually doing longer walks than I usually do because I’m focused on breathing and not how I have to get back to my computer. I feel calmer when I’m done and, as an added bonus, my dog is happy with the longer walks.
