I grew up watching Disney Princess movies. My favorite characters were Snow White, The Little Mermaid, and Maleficent, the evil witch in Sleeping Beauty. It never occurred to me that there were no Latinas like me represented in the Disney Princess universe. It might be because there weren’t many Latinas represented on television or film other than Sesame Street and Electric Company. The idea that there is now a Disney Latina Princess seems both wonderful and also long overdue. Elena of Avalor premieres tonight at 7 PM on the Disney Channel and it’s such a good show.
Elena is smart and powerful, but she’s also fun and kind. The music is great and so is the cast. Thanks to Babble, I was able to interview the creators of Elena of Avalor, Craig Gerber and Silvia Cardenas Olivas, and the voice of Elena, Aimee Carrero, about why now was the right time for a new Princess and what it means to be that princess.
It’s definitely worth tuning in and watching with your kids. I highly recommend it.
