Queen of Katwe and Long Way North Reviews
If you’re heading to the movies this weekend, you may want to check out two movies I reviewed for Common Sense Media – Queen of Katwe and Long Way North.
Queen of Katwe is a powerful and uplifting film from Disney with incredible acting by newcomer Phiona Mutesi and academy award winner Lupita Nyong’o. It’s about Phiona, a girl from the slums of Uganda who becomes a chess champion after she is taught the game by missionary Robert Katende (David Oyelowo). I urge everyone to take their older kids to see it. It’s a Disney movie with a positive message, but at the same time it doesn’t sugarcoat the difficulties Phiona and her family face just living day to day. What I loved most about it was the relationship between Phiona and her mother Harriett. Harriett works so hard to keep her children safe and fed while Phiona is discovering that there are opportunities beyond their circumstances. Here is my full review.
Long Way North is another girl-power movie about a teenager in 19th Century Russia who goes on an epic adventure to find her grandfather. He sailed off to find the North Pole and was lost at sea, bringing shame upon their family. It’s a beautiful animated tale that is not frenetic at all like many movies aimed at younger audiences these days. Here is my full review.
If you’re not familiar with Common Sense Media, it’s an amazing resource that features movie, television and game reviews for parents and kids. It details how much sex, violence and consumerism are in a movie along with positive messages and a review.
This is not a sponsored post. I really think you’ll enjoy these movies.
