As a kid growing up, I remember hearing about Three Kings Day in Catholic Church, but our family didn’t celebrate it the way families do now. In fact, like much of what I learned during Sunday services and years of catechism, I forgot many of the details other than there were three kings that saw a bright star in the sky, followed it to Bethlehem and found the baby Jesus. Three Kings Day is celebrated from Christmas Day to January 6th – the time it took the three wise men to find the manger. In some Latin American countries, the day the wise men found Jesus, January 6th, is celebrated with presents and other treats.
Target is celebrating the holiday with the Realitychangers family. Realitychangers, a Youtube channel featuring Jorge and Nancy Narvaez and their daughters Alexa and Eliana, made this adorable video about how they are celebrating the holiday.
I don’t think I’m getting my kids more presents, but we might follow the Mexican tradition of putting our shoes outside with food for the animals and see if the Three Kings bring us any candy. I’ll let you know what happens. Plus it will give us an excuse to go to La Monarca Bakery in Santa Monica (one of our favorites) and buy a Rosca de Reyes, which is a sweet bread with a toy baked inside.
