Tamales (photo by Yvonne Condes)

Tamales are a traditional Christmas Eve dinner in Mexico and in plenty of homes in Los Angeles as well, including my own. And it’s no surprise, given how delicious they are and what a perfect comfort food they are to share with family and friends. They can also be made with fillings that work for Vegetarians, Vegans and those who are Gluten-Free. Perfect for Angelenos, who all have a different fad diet they’re following at any given time.

But making Tamales, also known as a Tamalado, is a labor-intensive event, and for many of us, buying Christmas Eve Tamales from a restaurant or bakery is the way to go. Here are some great Los Angeles places to order tamales for this holiday season.

Guadalajara Bakery

This Hole-in-the-Wall spot has delicious tamales at a reasonable price. They come in chicken, pork, cheese, sweet corn and vegetable and sell for $16/dozen.

This long-standing tamale bakery in Marina del Rey is very popular and you need to get your orders in as soon as possible. They offer over 14 varieties, some very gourmet, and they sell for $27 – $87/dozen, depending on the fillings.

Recommended by friends of ours, this full-service restaurant often has lines out the door, so order early, or just be prepared to wait. Tamales come in chicken, pork & sweet, among other flavors, and sell for $18/dozen.

This supermarket also sells highly-recommended tamales, and there are several Southern California locations to choose from. Tamales come in beef, chicken, pork, cheese and sweet and sell for $15.99/dozen. Call ahead and choose the location that can best serve you.

They also have some in stores, so check their website for locations. They offer many flavors and they sell for between $25 – $66/dozen, depending on the size and fillings.

Los Cinco Puntos

Well known for their carnitas as well, these tamales go for $15.49/dozen. They come with the usual fillings and the cheese is highly recommended.

Sarah Auerswald is the co-Founder of MomsLA and is a big fan of tamales, especially when they are made by professionals. All these tamales come personally recommended by me and my friends.
