Why is Palm Springs such a great place to spend a weekend with the family?
When you are looking for a fun weekend trip with your family, the most important thing is to be able to get there within 2-3 hours, so you get to spend more time relaxing and enjoying than you do traveling.
Done.
One of the things that makes Palm Springs an ideal family getaway is just how close it is. A couple of hours on the road (if you can manage to leave before rush hour) and you’re there – ready for family time.
The second most important thing is to have a great place to be when you get there, and the newly remodeled Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa, Indian Wells is just that.

Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa, Indian Wells offers plenty of family fun, especially after undergoing its recent $4-million renovation. The resort has been refreshed, from the lobby to the guest rooms, and it’s a wonderful place for a family stay.
“There are luxurious new rooms and suites, as well as new dining and gathering options, a new lobby design, striking new fitness center and spa facilities including a remastered spa-pool garden, and exterior improvements which include numerous pool area upgrades and a lovely new outdoor olive grove perfect for small gatherings.”
It starts right at check-in: there’s a special section in the lobby just for kids, with a cute set of kiddie steps and extra little touches that make kids feel special. And it lets you know they care about even their youngest guests.
The hotel also has a kids’ club (Camp Esmeralda), and the concierge can arrange many family activities in the area, like one of the terrific Desert Adventures Red Jeep Tours of the nearby desert, or even hitting a few golf balls. Plus there’s almost nothing as fun for kids as ordering room service, and the resort staff can make that happen for sure.
Pool Time
Every family trip to the Palm Springs area requires pool time, and the pool at the Renaissance Esmeralda does not disappoint.
It is huge, with space for hundreds of people, and has a nice sandy beach area, perfect for families with little ones. There’s a cascading waterfall feature, which is super fun for kids to play in, especially at the hottest time of day.
There are 2 spa/hot tubs, perfect for warming up in the Desert winter, and there are luxurious cabanas for rent if you’re looking for privacy and comfort.
The H2O Pool Bar is right in the center of the pool area, which means you don’t even have to leave your lounge chair to be able to dine or drink well, thanks to the Executive Chef and team in the food and beverage department.
The pool has some hidden perks as well: there are VIP lounge chairs available to reserve ahead of time, allowing your family time to sleep in and still get premium poolside seating. And our personal favorite: there are umbrellas equipped with solar panels that allow you to charge your electronic devices while you lounge.
Camp Esmeralda
Kids ages 4-12 can spend time at Camp Esmeralda on weekends, giving their parents time for golf, quiet time at the pool, or perhaps a spa treatment. Camp is available as well on Saturday nights, so parents can even have time for date night.
Golf
Right next door to the hotel is the Indian Wells Golf Resort, with both a Celebrity Course and Players’ Course, each 18 holes. Everything about the resort is beautiful, and we recommend you experience it first thing in the morning, when the light is perfect and before the sun gets too high in the sky. Seasoned players welcome, but if you have patient partners, even amateurs are can play (we have personal experience). Driving range available.
Spa
Even on a family trip, parents may need a little pampering time. (Possibly more so.) The spa and salon offer many types of treatments, from massages and facials to cuts and color. Please plan ahead to get the appointment time you want. And possibly to arrange Camp Esmeralda time for the kids.
Dining Choices for Families
If there are kids who don’t like pizza, we’d like to meet them. Luckily for the rest, there’s SPC – Sirocco Pizza Company right in the hotel. Lots of kids (and most of their parents) like sushi, and for them, Glo Sushi takes care of them. The Place is a nice open cocktail lounge in the main lobby of the hotel, easy for meeting up with friends and for waiting for family members.
CAVA is the hotel’s signature all-day dining option, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, when it turns into CAVA Noche. Plus there’s a coffee spot in the upper lobby that can handle all your grab-and-go dining needs.
Of course, there’s always in-room dining as a fun choice, since we’ve never known a kid who didn’t enjoy it. And sometimes your kids are better suited to the room than to a room with other people in it. It’s fine; we won’t judge.
