There are hundreds, possibly thousands of Public Schools in Los Angeles County, and we’re listing all of the 80+ School Districts here so you can find info about schools in your community.
LA County is home to the 2nd largest school district in the United States: Los Angeles Unified School District, also known as LAUSD. But there are at least 80 other districts, each with multiple schools, scattered all around our large SoCal region.
Public School is Free to Attend
Technically this is true, because public schools are considered “Tuition-Free,” but of course there are still costs to running schools. The funding comes from taxpayer dollars, from the County, State and Federal levels. So as a taxpayer in the State of California, you have helped to pay for public schools.
However, when you send your children to a public school (or a public charter school), you will not be charged any tuition or fees.

LAUSD Magnet Schools and Other Specialized Options

Some Magnet School specialize in Languages, STEM programs, Visual and Performing Arts, and Highly Gifted programs – but there are over 300 Magnets to choose from, so please click over to the LAUSD Magnets website to find out more.

I want to learn about my Home School
As opposed to Homeschooling (see our Guide to Homeschooling here), each public school is designated as a Home School for a family, according to their address. For parents with young children, or parents who’ve relocated here, each school district has information about which school is your child’s default school.
And each district has different rules about how to switch from having your child attend their home school or another, so if that applies to you, you’ll need to check with each of them.
