Updated for 2024
Are you wondering what to put in your child’s Easter basket this year? I mean, besides the obvious Easter grass, chocolate, candy, and real or plastic eggs. It’s definitely something I’ve been thinking about lately.
I have a grandson under the age of two, and last year he was too young to know what Easter is all about. But things are different this year. He’s a whole year older and likely to be a bit more aware of what’s going on with the holiday celebrations. And I can’t leave out his younger sibling either, who will be making an appearance any day now!
Of course, I can fill their Easter baskets with the obvious things I mentioned earlier — the grass, candy, and eggs — but I don’t want to include too much candy as, understandably, their parents would like to limit the amount of sugar they eat (not that their newborn will be eating any candy, of course!). And I don’t blame them!
Ideas for Non-Food Easter Basket Fillers
Fortunately, there are quite a few other Easter basket fillers that aren’t food-related, such as the ones I’ve listed here.
For Toddlers:
- Bubbles, bubble wands, bubble guns, and other bubble toys
- Sidewalk chalk
- Crayons
- Coloring books
- Small toys like Matchbox cars
For Babies:
- Socks
- Diapers
- Travel size toiletries
- Baby toothbrush
- Sleepers
- Sun hat
- Small toys like rattles or teething rings
If you’re trying to fill your child’s Easter basket, here are a few more fillers you could choose:

Where to Get an Easter Basket
Of course, you’ll need something to contain all of the fun fillers you’ve made or purchased. It goes without saying that there are plenty of department stores and dollar stores that carry Easter baskets of all kinds, colors, sizes, and materials. They also come in many different price ranges.
But I didn’t want to buy common plastic bucket-type Easter baskets for my grandkids this year. Instead, I chose to stitch up a couple of cute baskets on my sewing machine using a pattern from JMB Handmade.
I made a quick trip to visit my good friend who owns a quilt store in my hometown. After picking up fabric and interfacing, per the instructions from JMB Handmade, I sequestered myself in my sewing room and got busy!
Once I finished the Easter baskets, one of which is pictured at the top of this post, I filled them up with some shredding and cute inexpensive Easter toys — and just a tiny bit of candy too. I think they turned out cute, but no matter what type of Easter baskets you choose for your kids, I bet they’ll love what you put in them.
