Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day and/or Emancipation Day, is a holiday commemorating the freedom of slaves in the United States. Juneteenth, short for June Nineteenth, is celebrated in different ways including marches, speeches, and more. 

Juneteenth is Monday, June 19th, 2023. Many events are planned this year, with some happening on Monday and some happening the weekend before Juneteenth.

The California African American Museum is hosting a Juneteenth Prosperity Market on Sunday, June 18th from 11:00 am to 3:30 pm. “Celebrate Black farmers, chefs, and entrepreneurs at this special Juneteenth edition of the Prosperity Market pop-up at CAAM!” Many activities are planned including cooking demonstrations, a children’s reading hour from the Los Angeles Public Library, yoga, children’s arts and crafts, fresh fruits and vegetables, artisan goods, prepared food, a DJ, and more.

The L.A. County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell Juneteenth Celebration and Resource Fair is happening on Sunday, June 18th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. This free event “raises awareness of the historical impact of Juneteenth as well as connects residents to vital County and community services.” The festivities include discussions, performances, food trucks, and more. Several special activities are planned including art projects (including painting your own Juneteenth flag), a sensory table, story times, music and movement, and more. Culver City Juneteenth Celebration and Resource Fair

The City of Culver City is hosting its Juneteenth Celebration and Resource Fair on Saturday, June 17th from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. This free event will feature guest speakers, live musical and dance performances, photo booths, a Black-owned business expo, food trucks, community resources, and more. Aquarium of the Pacific is hosting a Juneteenth Celebration on Monday, June 19th from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. “Learn about the history of this holiday and its significance to the African American community and beyond.” Families will learn more about the meaning and importance of the holiday through storytelling and music. Advance reservations are required and are available online. And if you can’t make it in person, the Juneteenth Celebration will be broadcast live on the Aquarium’s YouTube page.

Four LA County Parks are hosting Juneteenth celebrations on Saturday, June 17th. The free festivities include music, sports tournaments, live entertainment, workshops, food, kids’ zones, and more. These are free events with no registration required.

Movie in the Park Juneteenth Celebration of Culture

The City of Rialto invites families to its Movie in the Park Juneteenth Celebration of Culture event happening on Friday, June 23rd from 5:00 pm to 11:00 pm. The evening will include games, music, community resources, food vendors, giveaways (available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last), and more. A book reading is scheduled as is an outdoor showing of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The movie starts at sundown. Register online for this free event. (The movie is rated PG-13.)

31st Annual Juneteenth Celebration

The City of Santa Monica is hosting its annual Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 17th from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm. This year’s theme is “Coming Together in Appreciation, Reconciliation, and Commemoration!” This free event features craft vendors, live musical performances, a children’s area, food, local resources, and more.

Black Arts Los Angeles plans to host its annual Juneteenth Heritage Festival on Saturday, June 17th and Sunday, June 18th. Check the website for more details as they become available.   

The Long Beach Juneteenth Celebration

Hawaiian Gardens Library, a part of the LA County Library System, invites families to Celebrate Juneteenth at the library on Friday, June 16th from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. There will be a special Family Storytime, and children will have the opportunity to “learn more about the history of Juneteenth while enjoying books and special art activities.” This activity is for children ages 5-12. Advance registration is required as attendance is limited.

This special event features “messages of hope from top Black talent, thought leaders, and change agents from around the community and across Southern California.” While learning about, and celebrating, the history behind Juneteenth the community will also be celebrating and honoring fathers for Fathers Day. Enjoy music, art, food, games, dancing, a custom car and bike show, and much more at this free event.

June Jubilee: A Celebration of Black Excellence

Central Library is hosting June Jubilee: A Celebration of Black Excellence on Saturday, June 10th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. This inaugural event will “celebrate the rich Black culture in Los Angeles with special guest speakers, informative workshops, live entertainment and fun interactive activities for the whole family.” There will be discussions on health and wellness, business and financial literacy, technology, and more. Check the website for details and a schedule of the day’s events. This is a free, all-ages event. 

3rd Annual Juneteenth Soul Fest Block Party

The 3rd Annual Juneteenth Soul Fest Block Party is scheduled for Sunday, June 18th from 12:00 noon to 6:00 pm. This cultural celebration features a marketplace, live entertainment, games, food vendors, and the opportunity to have a lot of fun! Register online for this free event.

Rowland Heights Library, part of the LA County Library System, invites families to participate in a Juneteenth Community Quilt on Friday, June 9th (10 am to 6 pm), Saturday, June 10th (10 am to 6 pm), and Sunday, June 11th (1 pm to 5 pm). “Pick up instructions and a paper quilt square at the Customer Service Desk then write or draw what freedom means to you.” Return the completed quilt square to the library by Saturday, June 17th. The community quilt will be displayed in the library during the week of June 19th. This is an all-ages event.
