Friday, May 22

LA Fleet Week 
LA Waterfront at the Port of Los Angeles

LA Fleet Week is “an annual, multi-day celebration of our nation’s Sea Services held on the LA Waterfront at the Port of Los Angeles over the extended Memorial Day Weekend.” Plus, this year’s event is also the first event in L.A.’s AMERICA 250 celebration. The free event includes tours of active duty ships, live entertainment, aircraft flyovers, military displays and equipment demonstrations, and much more. Special neighborhood activations are happening this year, too, in a number of different locations including the Grove and Disneyland. The Festival and Tours take place on Friday, May 22nd through Monday, May 25th. Neighborhood activations begin on Tuesday, May 19th and continue through Monday, May 25th. Fiesta Hermosa
Downtown Hermosa Beach

Hermosa Beach’s annual Fiesta Hermosa, considered to be “Southern California’s largest beachside arts and craft festival,” is happening Memorial Day weekend – Saturday, May 23rd through Monday, May 25th. The fun includes live musical performances across multiple stages, carnival rides and games, food, artisan vendors, and much more. The event spans half-a-mile, with two shuttle bus stops. 51st Annual Topanga Days
Topanga Community Center

The 51st Annual Topanga Days event  is happening Memorial Day weekend – Saturday, May 23rd through Monday, May 25th from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm each day. A Parade is scheduled for Monday, May 25th starting at 8:30 am. The fun includes live musical performances, a variety of artisan vendors, food, and more. This special event is a fundraiser for the Topanga Community Center. Details and tickets are available online. 
  

Monday, May 25 – Memorial Day

34th Annual Canoga Park Memorial Day Parade
Sherman Way Blvd. (from Owensmouth to Cozycroft), Canoga Park, CA 

The 34th Annual Canoga Park Memorial Day Parade is happening on Monday, May 25th. This year’s theme is “Saluting the Price of Freedom.” The opening ceremony is at 10:00 am, and the parade starts at 11:00 am. Enjoy floats, cars (described as a “mobile patriotic show”), bands and choral groups, and more during this special tribute to our country’s fallen service members.

Toddler Tuesdays
The Autry Museum in Griffith Park

The Autry Museum hosts Toddler Tuesdays each Tuesday morning from 10:15 am to 11:00 am. “Dance, sing, play, and create in our weekly curriculum-based workshops for our smallest visitors.” Some Toddler Tuesdays feature Creative Movement, some are Musical Mornings, and some are Art with Amy programs. A schedule is available online.  Advance registration is required as space is limited. (The event is free with at least one paid adult museum admission. Children under 6 are free.)

Visit the Washington Irving Branch Library on Wednesday May 27th from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm for a special interactive presentation on ocean science. “Children and their families will learn about the importance of the ocean and have first-hand experiences and interactions with live tidepool animals.”

Each Thursday (May 7th through October 29th) from 5 pm to 9 pm, families are invited to enjoy Beach Eats, Food Truck Thursdays in Marina del Rey. This weekly food truck event is a great way to get a night off from cooking dinner. Bring a blanket and/or some beach chairs and you can have a picnic dinner on the beach! Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu

Star Wars fans are definitely going to want to get tickets to see Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu at the El Capitan Theatre. The film stars Pedro Pascal as legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin, Sigourney Weaver, and Jeremy Allen White and is co-written, co-produced, and directed by Jon Favreau. Several specialty screenings are planned including a Sensory Inclusive Screening (June 3), a Spanish Dubbed Screening (June 6), and and Open Caption Screening (June 7). On Friday, May 29th showtimes are: 9:00 am, 12:30 pm, 4:00 pm, 7:30 pm, and 10:55 pm. The movie has a runtime of 2 hours 12 minutes and is rated PG-13. Details and tickets are available online.

Street Food Cinema presents an outdoor screening of Mamma Mia! on Saturday, May 30th. Doors open at 5:30 pm, the band starts performing at 6:45 pm, and the movie starts at 8:15 pm. Food trucks will be on-site as well. The movie has a runtime of 1 hour 48 minutes and is rated PG-13. Tickets are available online.

The Museums of the Arroyo Day
Five Museums

The Museums of the Arroyo Day (MOTA Day) is happening on Sunday, May 31st from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. On this special day, 5 museums in Los Angeles and Pasadena open their doors, free of charge. “Celebrating a diverse mix of art, architecture and history of the Arroyo Seco area, MOTA Day features five unique history-based museums that preserve and perpetuate early Los Angeles life.” Plus, there is a shuttle service available so you can park your car once, and let the shuttle pick you up and drop you off at each site your family wants to explore. You can visit as many museums as you choose; it’s up to you and your family. Participating museums include Lummis Home, The Gamble House, Heritage Square, the Los Angeles Police Museum, and the Pasadena Museum of History. Details are available online.

Monday, June 1

Mummies of the World: The Exhibition
California Science Center

Summer is a great time to visit the California Science Center to check out Mummies of the World: The Exhibition. “Come face to face with over 30 naturally and intentionally preserved human and animal mummies from ancient Egypt, South America, and Europe, along with authentic burial objects, interactive AV experiences, and mummification tools.” Visitors will learn how “the scientific study of mummies provides a window into the lives of ancient people, past cultures, and our ever-changing world.” The exhibition will be on display at the California Science Center through September 7th, 2026. (Note – while this exhibition was at the California Science Center back in 2010, this time around is the final stop on the exhibition’s international tour and does include a new selection of mummies never before seen in L.A.)
And while you’re there, get tickets for the IMAX movie, Mummies 3D: Secrets of the Pharaohs. “Audiences will journey to the royal tombs of Egypt and explore the history of ancient Egyptian society as told through the mummies of the past.” The movie has a runtime of 40 minutes. The Sound of Music

The Sound of Music will be on stage at The Segerstrom from Tuesday, June 2nd through Sunday, June 14th. The Rodgers & Hammerstein classic is directed by three-time Tony Award® winner Jack O’Brien (Hairspray). The iconic tale featuring beloved songs is a family-favorite. The Wonder Studio – New Summer Exhibit

Pretend City Children’s Museum invites families to experience its new summer exhibit, The Wonder Studio. At The Wonder Studio, children can “paint, sculpt, build, and explore without limits.” The immersive summer art exhibit, gives families the opportunity to get messy, and creative, together. “This summer, art isn’t something you look at—it’s something to experience together. Every visit brings something new, where creativity grows through art, movement, and play.” The exhibit is recommended for children ages 2-9 and is included in general admission. Wild Kratts®: Creature Power® Exhibit

Discovery Cube Los Angeles invites families to visit their Wild Kratts®: Creature Power® exhibit. “Swing through the trees like a spider monkey, sneak through the forest like a jaguar, hunt for lunch like a platypus, and more in this adventurous new exhibit.” Families can explore the Wild Kratts®: Creature Power® exhibit through September 13th. All activities are included with general admission. Tickets are available online. (Note – Special themed Creature Power Weekends are planned for June 13th and 14th, July 3rd-5th, and August 22nd and 23rd.)

Summer Movies in the Park: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

The City of Santa Ana invites families to enjoy a Summer Movie in the Park on select Friday evenings this summer (through July 24th). The fun begins at 6:30 pm with themed crafts for kids, games, and complimentary popcorn (while supplies last). The movie begins at dusk. Each week features a different movie at a different park. On June 5th, spread out your picnic blanket or get comfy in your beach chairs, and settle in for a screening of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (rated PG).

Saturday, June 6

Gilmore Heritage Auto Show
The Original Farmers Market

The 30th Annual Gilmore Heritage Auto Show is happening on Saturday, June 6th from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. This year’s event is a celebration of the Centennial anniversary of Route 66 – America’s Main Street and will be “a tribute to the cars you would have most likely seen taking a road trip on this iconic highway, American cars of the 1960s.” Approximately 80 vehicles will be on display, including customs, hot rods, trucks and more. This is a free event.  
  

Sunday, June 7

23rd Annual Pacific Islander Festival
Aquarium of the Pacific

The Aquarium of the Pacific invites families to its 23rd Annual Pacific Islander Festival happening on Saturday, June 6th and Sunday, June 7th from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm each day. The annual event celebrates Pacific Islander cultures, including Hawaiian, Tongan, Tahitian, Samoan, Chamorro, Marshallese, M?ori, and Fijian. Families will enjoy live musical and dance performances, craft demonstrations, cultural displays, and more. The Festival is included in general Aquarium admission. Tickets are available online. 
 

Monday, June 8

Roundhouse Aquarium
2 Manhattan Beach Blvd., Manhattan Beach, CA (at the end of the Manhattan Beach Pier)

The Roundhouse Aquarium is such a fun place to explore. “More than 100 marine animals from Southern California’s waters live at the aquarium, many are native to its local waters in the Santa Monica Bay.” You’ll find sharks, moray eels, lobsters, moon jellies, octopus, and more. Touch tanks allow you to interact with sea stars, sea cucumbers, sea snails, and sea urchins. During the summer, the Roundhouse Aquarium is open Monday through Friday from 2 pm to 7 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 7 pm. The aquarium offers free admission, though donations of $5 each, or $10 per family, are suggested and much appreciated. (Note – These are the Aquarium’s Summer Hours. Hours differ during fall and winter, October through March.)

The Fairy and the Pirate

Families are invited to the Stevenson Ranch Library for a special performance on Tuesday, June 9th from 2:00 pm to 2:45 pm. “Join Fairy Stardust as she takes us to Fairyland, only to find Pirate Captain Morgan there to join in the fairy fun.” The musical show features “a beautiful fairy, a hilarious pirate with music, magic, and dancing.” (Recommended for families with children ages 5-12.)

California State Parks Week

California State Parks Week is happening Wednesday, June 10th through Sunday, June 14th. This year’s tagline is “This is where you live.” A variety of different activities are planned to coincide with the week’s themes. California State Parks Week Themes include Explore New Experiences, Nourish Your Health and Well-Being, Support Climate Resilience, Celebrate Community and Culture, and Care For Our Shared Lands. Italian American Museum of Los Angeles (IAMLA)

The 6,000 square-foot Italian American Museum of Los Angeles (IAMLA) “explores the Italian American experience in the context of the nation’s multicultural mosaic.” The Museum is housed in the Italian Hall, which was built in 1908 as a community center. “The Italian Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is among the oldest remaining structures from the city’s historic Little Italy.” “The IAMLA’s permanent exhibition consists of seven individual sections that are arranged chronologically, thematically, and color-coded for easy navigation: Italy’s Imprint on North America and the American West, Pioneers, Settlement, Italian Hall, Dago!, Italians in Hollywood, and Culture.” The Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. While admission is free, donations are encouraged.

Beach Movie Nights: Smurfs

Enjoy a free screening of Smurfs (rated PG) “on the sand, by the waves, and under the stars” on Friday, June 12th at 8:00 pm. No tickets are required, but be sure to RSVP so you can be notified of any last-minute changes. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. (Parking is $3 after 6 pm.) Be sure to bundle up. (Each Friday evening, through August 28th, the Department of Beaches and Harbors will host this weekly Beach Movie Nights series.)

Choo Choo Revue is the first new show from Bob Baker Marionette Theater in 40 years! “Your theater seat becomes a train bound for fantasy! Meet dancing luggage, singing mushrooms, and a cicada jugband.” The hour-long show features over 100 handcrafted, brand new puppets! Performances are scheduled throughout the summer, with a sensory-friendly show happening on Saturday, August 1st at 10:30 am and shows with ASL Interpretation happening on Saturday, July 25th and Sunday, August 30th. The Getty Center invites families to participate in Superpower Portraits: Collage Workshop, a drop-in family workshop on Sunday, June 14th from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. This bilingual workshop (Spanish and English) will give families the chance to “explore creative collage techniques and transform recycled materials into vibrant Superpower Portraits. Layer colors, patterns, textures, and images that reflect your strengths, your story, and the people and places that shape you. Then join artist Willie Thomas to build a collective portrait wall celebrating the many identities, traditions, and talents that make our community strong.” Family programs are free and don’t require a ticket. The Getty Center does require a timed-entry reservation, and there is a fee for parking.

Concerts in the Park

During the summer (from June 11th through August 6th), the City of Lakewood hosts free Thursday night concerts from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. On June 18th, Smith Country Band is scheduled to perform. Dinner and refreshments will be sold on-site; however, families may also bring their own picnics. Lawn chairs and blankets are encouraged.

Friday, June 19 – Juneteenth

Juneteenth Freedom Day Celebration

Visit the Korean Bell of Friendship on Friday, June 19th from 10:30 am to 12:15 pm for a special Juneteenth Freedom Day Celebration. This free event is organized by the LA County African American Employees Association (LACAAEA) and will include live musical performances as well as the ringing of the Korean Bell of Friendship. The Friendship Bell will be rung for “liberty and justice” at 11:30 am. Free tickets may be reserved online.

Experience SOAR Tropical Butterflies at South Coast Botanic Garden through Wednesday, September 30th. This annual event, “where wonder takes flight,” gives families the chance to “immerse yourself amid hundreds of tropical butterflies not normally found in Southern California.” In addition to walking among the butterflies, visitors can feed the butterflies by adding on the optional Butterfly Feeding Experience (for an additional fee). “You will be given a ‘lollipop’ to use while inside the pavilion to help entice butterflies to come close to you for the optimum and most immersive experience.” Visitors must purchase a timed ticket in advance. The 66th Los Angeles Open Streets Event: CicLAvia – Leimert Park meets Expo Park is happening on Sunday, June 28th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. This is an all-ages and all-abilities event. Participants may jog, ride, bike, skate, or walk as they explore along the route. Remember, this is not a race; families may enter and exit the route when and where it’s most convenient for them. The 60th Annual Sawdust Art Festival runs from Friday, June 26th through Sunday, September 6th. The Sawdust Art Festival, described as “Laguna’s most iconic summer tradition,” features a wide variety of artwork (including painting, sculpture, mixed media, metal, illustration, and more) and the artists themselves, live musical performances on three stages, art classes, artist demonstrations, and a variety of outdoor dining and drink offerings. The event is a celebration of a “beautiful game and the global community it brings together. The Taper Auditorium will be transformed into an immersive, stadium-like atmosphere with professional audio and a large high-definition screen for maximum visibility and an unforgettable viewing experience.” RSVP online for this free event. Councilmember Bob Blumenfield’s Annual July 4th Extravaganza is taking place from 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm. Enjoy a free concert featuring Doctor Wu, performing the music of Steely Dan, and a spectacular 20-minute fireworks display. More than 15 local food trucks will be on-site as well as many arts-and-crafts vendors and local businesses promoting and selling their goods. The event is free, and there is limited free parking in the area. However, parking in the structures is $25 – cash only – and all parking fees serve as a donation to the Valley Cultural Foundation. Stories in the Afternoon: Over and Under the Pond

The Norton Simon Museum invites families to enjoy Stories in the Afternoon on Sunday, July 5th from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. A Museum Educator will be reading Over and Under the Pond, written by Kate Messner and illustrated by Christopher Silas Neal. Childen will also take a “close look at the shapes in Barbara Hepworth’s sculpture Assembly of Sea Forms.” Then, participants will “draw your own pond, filled with all the plants, animals and surprises you can imagine.” Space is limited to 20 participants and recommended for children ages 4-8. The Chinese American Museum is “housed in one of the oldest and last surviving structures of Los Angeles’ original Chinatown.” The 7200-square foot museum is “dedicated to researching, preserving, and sharing the experiences and contributions of Chinese Americans in the United States through quality exhibitions, programs, and events.” The Icon: Anna May Wong is one of the museum’s current exhibitions. “More than 100 years after launching her film career, Anna May Wong remains a Hollywood legend as the first Chinese American movie star. Wong, who appeared in more than 70 films, plays, radio shows, and television programs, paved the way for the Asian American actors who later followed in her footsteps. Often typecast in stereotypical roles, Wong fought against racist portrayals of Asians and spoke out about the limited opportunities for Asian actors in Hollywood, in comparison to her white counterparts who were recruited to play Asian characters in yellowface.” (The exhibition will be available through August 30th.) The Sun Wing Wo General Store and Herb Shop, a permanent exhibition, is a recreation of an actual store from the 1890s. The Chinese American Museum is open six days a week from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm (closed on Mondays). Suggested admission is $3 for adults; $2 for seniors 60+ and students with ID.)

“This Land Is…” Exhibition

To commemorate the 250th anniversary of our country’s Declaration of Independence, visit “This Land Is…,” a special exhibition at The Huntington. “The exhibition’s title references the iconic 1940s song ‘This Land Is Your Land’ by Woody Guthrie. Moving from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and from precolonial America to the 21st century, the exhibition presents multiple perspectives addressing such topics as opportunity and dispossession, mapping and ecology, and preservation and repair. A wide range of voices from the past and present—across distant geographies—come together through documents, artworks, and artifacts to tell a multilayered story.” The exhibition includes photographs; a 1936 acoustic guitar owned by songwriter and activist Woody Guthrie; two rare, annotated July 1776 printings of the Declaration of Independence; contemporary artwork; and more. The Marina del Rey WaterBus began its summer season on Friday, June 19th. The WaterBus operates from eight stops in the Marina which makes it a fun way to take in all the sights and sounds of Marina del Rey. The WaterBus generally operates Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays (and will be operating on Labor Day). Tickets are available at each stop and are $1 per passenger, one way, and may be bought in person (cash) or online (credit/debit). Be sure to check the website for the most up-to-date operating hours and a map of the route taken by the WaterBus. (Note – the Summer Season ends on Monday, September 7th.)

Culver City Julian Dixon Library invites families to attend “LA Rams Readers Storytime with Rampage,” a special storytime happening on Tuesday, August 11th from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. “Rams Readers is an interactive reading experience designed to inspire kids to discover the excitement, adventure, and imagination that reading provides.” All children in attendance will receive a copy of the book to take home. The USC Pacific Asia Museum was established over 50 years ago and is one of the few museums in the United States entirely dedicated to the arts and culture of Asia and the Pacific Islands. The museum’s collection includes more than 15,000 objects, “spanning more than five thousand years and the region extending from Persia to the Pacific Islands.” Additionally, the Museum regularly hosts workshops, festivals, performances, classes, and more throughout the year. One special interactive exhibit you won’t want to miss is Crossroads: Exploring the Silk Road Gallery. Crossroads is “where the sights and sounds come to life through stories, music, tactile objects, an interactive discovery map, intergenerational reading area, and highlights from the museum’s collection. With enhanced accessibility and innovative design features, Crossroads aims to inspire curiosity, build empathy, and catalyze connection by immersing visitors in the stories of intercultural exchange along the Silk Road.” The Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. Columbia Memorial Space Center is currently undergoing an exciting expansion. The expansion will feature “the historic Inspiration space shuttle mock-up inside a 40,000-plus square foot, indoor and outdoor, learning complex where interactive exhibits and unique learning spaces will take science education and special events to the next level. Originally built in 1972 by Rockwell International, the Inspiration shuttle served as the engineering prototype for NASA’s space shuttles.” The Space Center offers a number of special events and activities throughout the year. “Every exhibit, workshop, and event is designed to spark curiosity, nurture creativity, and empower learners of all ages to imagine what’s possible.” The Center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

The Santa Ana Zoo is small, features South American animals, and is known for monkeys and primate conservation. Plus, now through October 15th, 2026, families can also observe butterflies up close through Flight! A Live Butterfly Experience. The Zoo also hosts multiple storytime events throughout the week, on Sundays, Mondays, and Wednesdays. Storytime is open to all Zoo visitors, is included in general admission, and feature a story and new animal friend. And don’t forget the rides – including the Conservation Carrousel, the Zoofari Express (an electric train), and the 50 Monkeys Ferris Wheel. 43rd Annual Malibu Chili Cook-Off
