When you need to find a pediatrician, you’ll want to consider many factors. Kids doctors can vary in their styles, whether they accept your health insurance plan or not, and how they handle vaccination schedules, to name a few.
Choosing a pediatrician takes time, but it’s worth the investment early on; you could be seeing this physician for 18-26 years!
Many pediatricians will meet with you during your pregnancy so you can decide if you’d like to work with them. This is your chance to ask about how they work with babies, kids, and teens, not to mention how they work with you as a parent.
You’ll also get a chance to take a measure of the office and staff, and learn the procedures you’ll be expected to follow. Often a baby will need to see the pediatrician dozens of times during their first year, and then at least annually for check-ups, not including any sick visits.
Don’t forget the older kids
School age kids will need vaccinations and proof for public school, and tweens staring puberty have their own set of needs that a kids doctor can take care of.
If you have an athlete in the family, your pediatrician usually needs to provide signed forms for each year of play, asserting to your child’s health.
The pediatrician will likely be someone you and your child interact with for nearly two decades, and when you think about it that way, the choice becomes all the more important.
