A Perfect Afternoon at MakersKit DIY Flagship Store on Melrose

It’s not easy to find things to do with children of a certain age (tweens!), but my son and I had a great afternoon at MakersKit DIY Kits + Supplies on Melrose. We went to the opening party for the brand’s first retail store that opened on April 10th.

Terrarium1

The store was packed full of supplies to make beautiful terrariums and bath products and there were work stations to put everything together. My son and I made a hanging and a potted terrarium. I’m not crafty and it was not a problem. The staff was very knowledgeable about how to put the terrarium together so there was enough soil to keep the succulents alive and enough decoration to make it look pretty.

After we made terrariums, we moved to another station to make bath salts. We were given a kit that included most of the supplies we would need plus there were scents and oils on the table.

We both chose a lavender scent and it smelled lovely. Again, a knowledgable staff member walked us through what to do so our bath salts weren’t too smelly or too oily.

Once we were done, the staff packaged the terrarium in a box and the salts in a bag. Everything we made was wonderful and would make lovely gifts (I’m keeping mine). But the best part was that my son and I were able to do something together that we can remember every time we look at our terrariums.

An outing to MakersKit can be as inexpensive or as costly as you choose to make it. There are $10 DIY kits or you can add on to make it as elaborate as you’d like. You can buy kits online through MakersKit.com or at any of the hundreds of retail stores that sell the kits including Macy’s and Urban Outfitters. I talked to MakersKit Founder Mike Stone for our Podcast about why he wanted to open a retail location.

He said that they are able to test out new products and the most popular ones will go into stores. They also do events like birthday parties and Moms Night Out events. Groups of six or less are walk-in and bigger parties require a reservation to have enough staff on hand to help make the projects.

I think it would be a great birthday party for older kids who can follow direction and are good with glass and other delicate items. My son and I had a great time and I think we’ll go back with my 10-year-old.
