Every couple of days we get an automated phone call from the Los Angeles Unified School District. The calls are about everything from children’s health insurance to an announcement about … I don’t even know what because I usually delete them. But this week, we got a call with very important information.
The Wasserman Foundation has donated $2 million to LAUSD through DonorsChoose.Org. That means that starting this month more than 600,000 households will receive a gift card for $15 to use for a classroom project. The donation is to encourage innovation in the classroom and it doesn’t stop with $15. The Wassserman Foundation will match parents’ donations through DonorsChoose up to $2 million. DonorsChoose.Org is a site that allows anyone to donate to a specific classroom project.
Public and charter school teachers in LAUSD are encouraged to come up with 2 projects with a need of up to $800. Can you imagine? My friend teaches at an elementary school with only two working computers. This money can help so many students.
A lot of people want to give money to LAUSD it seems. Starting in January, Starbucks will be giving out DonorsChoose cards at Los Angeles stores.
All of this money cannot go to waste. It’s up to us parents. The schools desperately need this money right now. And we need to get the word out about how they can get it. Tell every parent you know not to confuse the gift card with junk mail and actually use it.
There is a group of us at my sons’ school that are going to help set up the DonorsChoose account. You are a tech savvy bunch, friends, and if you can help out a school, please do.
Now I’m off to retrieve the LAUSD messages I deleted. You never know what they’ll say.
