What to Get Mom for Christmas or Hanukkah
Shopping for the mom in your life can isn’t always easy; everyone has different tastes and you want your gift to be interesting and meaningful. We’ve compiled some great gifts for mom that we either own ourselves or really want to.
I’m in love with this bag; it’s a Rebecca Minkoff Avery Envelope Crossbody bag. I bought it on Amazon a couple of weeks ago and I’ve received quite a few compliments. It’s roomy, has a lot of places to stash your belongings and it’s very good quality. I paid less than half of what it’s priced at now so I would look back often to see if it’s on sale.
Speaking of sales, LuckyBrand has a really good Cyber Monday sale. I’ve worn this jacket every day since I bought it. The lined, brushed Puff Sleeve Cord Jacket is perfect for work or for a casual day out with kids.
One of the reasons that I love Kendra Scott is because she doesn’t just make beautiful, reasonably priced jewelry, she gives back to the community. She donates jewelry to school fundraisers and will host in-store fundraiser parties that give back to nonprofits. All of that aside, these earrings are gorgeous and fun and perfect for the holidays.
A UCLA professor friend has been trying to get me to read “My Brilliant Friend” for years. I’m finally reading it and I can’t put it down. It’s beautiful and vivid and heartbreaking. It’s about two best friends, Elena and Lila, who grow up in poor in Naples, Italy beginning in the 1950s. I can’t wait to read the other books. Amazon has the individual books and a collection of paperbacks. I got this hardcover collection for my … (I won’t say in case she sees this) at Costco.
Speaking of books, this is the one I want for Christmas. In Michelle Obama’s Becoming, the former first lady chronicles her incredible journey to the White House and beyond. If you were lucky enough to see her speaking tour or hear her interview with Oprah on Super Soul Sunday than you know you’re in for a treat with this book.
We get my boys the LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar every year and it’s a big hit. It’s an early present (it’s an advent calendar that starts December 1st), but it has been a cute way for them to get in the holiday spirit and also to share and communicate with each other – they switch off days they open their LEGO and then negotiate which pieces they want to keep.
Ralph Breaks the Internet is in Theaters today and there are some great toys that go along with the movie. These Funko Supercute Plushies are an adorable gift and so are Funko Pop Wreck it Ralph and Venellope.
There’s no way around it these days; kids need a laptop for school when they get to middle and high school. My son uses this Acer Chromebook and it’s great – lightweight, fast and good for everything he needs to do for school.
For younger kids, the Amazon Fire HD 8* is great for kids to read books, play games and watch videos. Kids can also access more than 1,000 books, apps and in Spanish. It also comes with a sturdy case and, even so, the best part is that it has a 2-year warranty so if your child breaks it, Amazon will replace for free.*
Gifts for Dad
Finding the right gift for dad can be tricky. There are a lot of cool gifts for dad out there, but it’s important to find one that will be useful and fun or just really cool. Here are some of our favorites.
The Apple Watch Series 4 has all the things – heart rate monitor, activity tracker, built-in cellular so you can talk on your watch, a timer and an emergency SOS. Plus the newest version has a larger display, louder speaker and a faster processor (okay, now I want one).
The Columbia Turbodown jacket looks good and will keep him warm whether he’s out for a walk or skiing down a mountain. It’s “one of the warmest, softest, and lightest jackets” Columbia makes. We have a lot of Columbia products and they last a long time and stay looking good through years of wear.
Gifts for Pets
Our dog loves plopping down on his dog bed that sits next to my desk in my home office. It’s small and portable so we take it when we he comes with us on road trips.
If you have a cat, you might want to get him this Tower or Tracks Cat toy. We don’t have cats, but it looks like it would be a good time.
Los Angeles Experiences
My favorite gifts to give and receive are experiential. It’s fun to get the family out and about and do something that we might not normally do for ourselves. In Los Angeles, there are so many fun things to do with kids. Here are some of our favorite only-in-LA experiences.
(Sponsored Listing) This may be a sponsored listing, but I can honestly say that the gift I most love to receive is a Burke Williams gift card. My mother-in-law and I have started giving them to each other so we can spend the day together. It’s delightful. We hang out in the spa, get a massage or facial and then go to lunch. If you’d like to experience this with your suegra, girlfriend or just go on your own, Burke Williams has some great specials right now. Gift card packages are on sale now and include the Burke Williams’ experiential “Mind+Body Holiday” gift card package that includes a Burke Williams Signature Massage, 50-min Spa Style Facial and enhancement of choice for $250 ($350 value). To buy a gift card or get information on other packages, visit BurkeWilliamsSpa.com.
From now through January 6th, 2019, the Los Angeles Zoo lights up and becomes an even more magical place with LA Zoo Lights. Families can go on a colorful, nighttime journey through the zoo and see a herd of animated elephants, giant snowflakes and a discoball forest.
The LA Conservancy features walking tours in Downtown LA where you can discover the history of this great city. From Art Deco to the Modern Skyline to Union Station – there’s something for everyone. Downtown LA Walking Tours’ list of tours includes a haunted tour of Downtown LA!
My son and I recently had the best time as guests at a holiday sweets cooking class at The Gourmandise School in Santa Monica. He learned how to torch a meringue, roll a yule log and frost a cutout cookie. They have classes for kids and teens (6-17) and for adults with different cooking experience levels.
